Welcome! Often bands will have a year printed on them, but it looks like that's not the case wth Emerald... TFA is most likely the breeder's initials, UT is the state he was born in (Utah), and the 250 is PROBABLY an indication that he is the 250th bird banded by the breeder, although it may be a semi-arbitrary number... I used to have a link to a searchable online band info site, but I can't find it right now. Hope that helps a little bit.

Depending on weather his previous owners addressed him by name or not regularly, he may or may not know it... You can see if he responds better to commands when you use his name or not (eg: "Emerald, step up" vs. Just "Step up"). If he seems to know it then it'll probably be confusing for him if you try to change it... I must say I agree with Jawzx, If you want to change his name, perhaps pick a name that sounds like his original name for example, if your Eclectus was named Charlie, and you wanted Harley, this would be an easy change since they sound so close.

If you know the original ownes or rescue may know them, Perhaps you can contact them to find out who the original breeder was and I'm sure that they would have records on your Eclectus and can tell you their age.

Please make sure that all Family members handle your new Eclectus. Eclectus are very sweet, smart, and really enjoy being around their new flock, meaning you. Please be careful around the change of seasons, Eclectus are one of the most horney little guys, your hand, their toys, or just a pillow can be prime target for them. if they start to grind, the best way to handle this is to remove them back to their cage until they calm down.

Thank you for the quick information. I will post a picture tomorrow for sure as I am out the door to work right now. He had been a plucker for years and was almost totally bald. He spent 3 months at the rescue with a great woman and great care and now his feathers are growing back. Please let me know your opion of your experiences with this when I post his pick.

Congrats! Its great that you took in a rescue bird, my GCC is a rescue as well. His name is Charlie and we kept it because a few days after we picked him up, he started saying it (he's very egocentric with his talking - mostly "Charlie" "Good Charlie" "good Buddy-Buddy"). I think that the name change is up to you but it does seem as though they tend to know their name, at least in some abstract sense, so maybe its nice to hear a familiar sound when they're in a new environment. Enjoy your new guy!

Great advice. After reflecting on it I feel the same way. Happy to connect to another adopter. There are sooo many birds that need homes. The woman I got Emerald from had over 35 birds waiting with more on a waiting list. No reason not to adopt..I can't imagine a bird being a better guy than Em. He is super friendly, loves everyone, is potty trained(mostly) and is fairly mellow and quiet. I will post pics.

Congrats on your new adoption! Good luck with finding information about his band. I searched for information about Ozzys past for three months. Here are some resources I used:

The American Federation of Aviculture has some band information if the breeder was registered: 512-585-9800

L&M Leg bands is a major supplier (909) 882-4649

Leg Band Registry is a website I used but I dont find any information for you on there.

And lastly Red Bird is another supplier: (530)620-7440

The suppliers make bands for thousands of people but L&M was able to give me a list of three breeders in Florida that matched Ozzy's band.

I read somewhere that with dogs, if you want to change their name, you can can combine two names and then start saying the other by itself eventually. Kind of like switching from seeds to pellets, in a sense lol! Like if you were to change his name from Emerald to Bob, you would start calling him "EmeraldBob," and then eventually just "Bob." I think it mght work with birds.. EmeraldBob is less confusing than just Bob, so I think you just have to gradually change it. But then again Emerald -> EmeraldBob -> Bob miht confuse them. Don't know, maybe someone else can share their opinion?
