I am currently hand feeding 3 baby cockatiels, which were tossed aside by the parents. I have been caring for them since day 1, which was 3 weeks ago.
All of them have been doing fine until this week.

So earlier this week something unusual happened and I'm still not sure if this is what caused the problem with my youngest cockatiel Abbey.
This is what happened:

Earlier this week I checked on the babies to see if their crops were empty, like I usually do.I opened the lid, and 2 of the younger babies were barely moving, only the older one was fine.
to my shock my heating pad had died, and both babies were stone cold and lethargic:eek::eek:
I quickly grabbed the two youngest ones, and placed them on my neck with my hands around them to warm them up, while stroking them gently.
My daughter Sarah plugged in another heating pad. Once it was warm, I placed all three on the pad to warm them up. It was not on hot, and I know they did not get burned.
Angus(the oldest) was fine, Chance(the middle one came around very quickly) but Abbey(the youngest) was still lethargic, the poor thing took forever to warm up.
I placed them back into their temporary brooder once it was up to the proper temperature. When I was confident they were nice and warm, I fed them for the night.

About three days later I noticed Abbeys neck really red(she woke up with it)
I examined her, touched her neck and it didn't seem to be uncomfortable for her, but her eyes were closed and she was lethargic again.
Ok, I racked my brain trying to figure out what caused this redness. It wasn't crop infection, crop burn, impacted crop, etc...I researched this for hours with no results.
I searched this forum as well, and came across a site with some excellent info.
Then I came across the Guardian Angel product, which I had here!!
so I thought, I'll give it a try, I have nothing to loose, and I felt if I didn't try something, Abbey would not make it, she had been like this for 3 days, and was progressively getting worse, and now the side of her throat was starting to swell a little, oh no!
Of course with her only being barely 2 weeks old, I was extremely reluctant to try anything in fear it would have disastrous results:(

I added the guardian angel into her formula, just for her, and prayed it would help.

WOOOHOOO!!!!!!! I am over the moon this morning you should see her!
not only is the swelling and redness gone, her eyes are open, she is standing up, and screamed for food this morning, which she has not done in days.
talk about an emotional rollercoaster, but she is 80% better.:D:D:D:D

I still don't know what caused this, which really bothers me, I am wondering if it had to do with her being so cold when the heating pad cut out.
Anybody have any ideas, I would love to find out.

I will give it to her again tonight, I just can't find how long you give it for
If anyone knows would you please let me know on here or PM me.. thank you.

After reading what GA is, my guess would be a local cellulitis (skin swelling) caused by bacterial invasion. The GA provides what seems a bolus of nutrition to boost the birds immune system. The cold shuts down the circulatory system so the immune response is effectively stopped. Once you restored his bloodflow the GA was able to assist his body to fight it off. That is just a guess based upon my years as a nurse.
