Weight fluctuation

I just recently started weighing my BFA, Fidget. His weight has gone from 391 gms to 378 gms in 4 days. He generally eats well, chop, fresh fruits and veges along with a few nuts. He is VERY active, always playing with toys and chattering like a maniac. Hes 2 years old.

He has been getting more picky about his chop in the last week. He hasnt been eating it much. Not sure why, this is new. He has always eaten it with no problem up to now. I'm going to make a new batch soon, maybe he will eat that better. He has been favoring fruits over the veges in general too.

The only other thing that might be playing into his not eating as much chop is that I am only giving it to him in his cage. Otherwise its a constant disaster area all over my kitchen and living room. It just got to be crazy. However, he has always eaten it in all 3 locations, so its not like its something new. The only change is that hes not getting it anywhere but his cage now.

Is that much weight fluctuation a problem or is it normal? (or maybe because hes only getting it in his cage now?) He does get other treats on his tree and stand all day long.

Thanks for any help/advice.

:)

Hi, try and sit with Fidget when it's feeding time and see if he eats better? They like being part of a flock, eat when you eat. If this makes no difference and still drops weight then a visit to the CAV will be required. Have you changed your recipe?

I am assuming you have no other things that are 'odd' to you and would make CAV appointment sooner rather than later?

Weight chart FYI https://www.beautyofbirds.com/averageweightsofamazons.html

Thanks for your reply Plumsmum2005

I have been sitting with him and eating my breakfast with him sometimes and that does help a bit, but starting tomorrow I wont be able to do that. (Going back to work and leaving really early) Chop is the same as its been for quite awhile.

Everything else is the same and I dont see any other changes in him. It sorta seems like hes just mad that its in his cage, and not on his stand. (cage door is open though) I dont know if I should go ahead and give him treats during the day, or try and get him hungry enough to eat his 'good' food first. I dont like not giving him other stuff through the day. I worry that he wont get enough to eat, but I dont want him just eating treats and not his chop. :(

Is there anything he really likes such as pasta, if so maybe that will entice him?

Use treats in foragers to keep him busy?

Great advice provided above!

Just as a general comment, it is very important to remember that to get a consistent weight requires that the weight is take at a very specific time each day. The best time to take weight is first thing in the morning after the first moment of the day and before providing food!

Please remember to write down the weight, day and time!

I have put rice in it and he picks the rice out and leaves the rest. Maybe he gets enough that way, I dont know. I just made some new chop today and its in the dehydrator now. Maybe he will like that better, who knows?

I got him a foraging toy, he took it apart after he ate all the goodies. .I do put it up again occasionally, but he immediately takes it down. Keeping busy isnt an issue. Hes a toy junkie and has about 8 different toys in his cage to keep him busy and I change them out frequently. But when he doesnt want to eat in his cage, he ignores the toys and just yells for me.

Maybe hes getting enough, I just worry when his weight fluctuates that much.

Sailboat, I am weighing him first thing in the morning, right after I uncover him and before he eats anything. I am writing it down which is why the difference caught my attention.

IMHO, rice is little more than a filler, i.e. it offers little more than bulk in a diet! But, that's my opinion!

I can put pasta in instead and he does like that as well. Or oats. What do you suggest as far as something to entice that has some nutritional value? He will eat darn near anything....usually.

Well that is good news!

As part of the Amazon Forum is the Sticky Threads located at the top of the Forum Page! Please read both!

At this point, Open the Thread that has a title that starts: I Love Amazons - ... That Thread is Huge and has a ton of information included as part of Segments! The first page lists near all the Segments. Look for the Thread that talks about Amazon Diet, What makes up a solid diet. I will copy the Segment title and list it here after I complete this Post!

That Segment will provide you what is commonly found as part of a healthy diet.

Take a look at this Segment: 2. Correct Food for an Amazon Page 2
