Microchip

Hi I was wondering what everyone thoughts are on having a microchip put in your birds I don,t plan on doing that but i was just curious what the pros and cons are and if anyone has had it done

I'm not sure how it is in the rest of the world.... or even other parts of Australia but microchipping birds is becoming more popular in Sydney. With dogs and cats here it's a legal requirement, The microchip has a number which is stored on a registry with your details along side the number. If any of your animals get out a vet or ranger can scan them, access your details and contact you (often with a fine attached ). With dogs and cats here it works well if owners keep the registry updated eg new address or owner, and if the found animal is taken to the pound or vet, not kept by the finder.

I think the only advantage at this stage for microchipping birds is that if you lose your bird you can prove that it is yours though the microchip. If your bird flys off & someone finds your bird and takes it to a vet and the vet knows to scan it then hopefully it can be returned to you. I guess the more popular microchipping birds becomes the better this system will work.

I'm not aware of any adverse reactions to microchipping, the only cons I'm aware of is the stress the actual proceedure will have on the bird.... unless they have made a smaller chip, they are about the size of a grain of rice so it's a bloody big needle. I'm still tossing up on having it done. I see the avian vet late next week for a health check and will discuss it with him so will let you know what he thinks.
