I have noticed that average prices for birds vary HUGELY depending on where you live, so I'm curious to know just how they vary. :)

I've listed some types of birds and obv just comment on the ones applicable to you, either birds you own or just if you know the average price of the species, and also which country you live in. I think it will make quite interesting reading!

Country you live in:

Bird: (average price here)
CAG:
Eclectus (state subspecies):
Cockateils:
Cockatoo (pls state subspecies):
Amazons (pls state subspecies) :
Macaw (pls state subspecies) :

Thanks!

All the prices I've either seen on the net or in pet shops, Most are for handreared birds but not all. Many breeders don't advertise price

Country you live in: Australia

Bird: (average price here)
CAG: $5000+
Eclectus (state subspecies):
Hybred 750-1500 - most are hybreds here. Many are sold as pure but are not. I have heared the pure ecky's can cost a couple of thousand dollars
Cockateils: $20+
Cockatoo (pls state subspecies):
Black red tail - $1500-3500
Sulfur Crested - $200-$600
Galahs - $300
Most other subs such as Umbrellas are rare so unable to find $$
Amazons (pls state subspecies) : Unable to find - rare
Macaw (pls state subspecies) : B & G $7000+, Hyacinth up to $40 000 all other subspecies are somewhere in between
Conures: $350-600

IRN - $300-900
King, Lori's, Rosellas $100+ - some are aviary prices

Wow thanks for that Mel :)

It is very different here in South Africa. I will put my prices in pounds.

CAG: £150-£400
Eclectus:
Solomon: £150-£200, Red Sided £200, Vosmaeri £500
Cockatoo:
Lesser sulphur: £300, Medium Sulphur: £450, Umbrella: £700-£1000
Amazons, most about £200-£300
Macaws: Hahns <£100, Other large common ones: £400-£600.
Conures: £40-£60

Prices are much cheaper here for many birds, espec African Greys! We paid twice for Bear what we see advetised, but we got him because we felt sorry for him :)

I do not know how to convert pounds to dollars but the price for a CAG from the breeder i used was $1,200. My Rosie being a Timneh was $950. Pet shops are much more. Pet Smart has a Jenday for $650.

What amazes me is, most people buying a bird from a pet shop are the ones that have least knowledge about birds.
The majority of them anyway.
Then they pay such a high price for a bird.

So true. One of the pet shops here sells B & G's for $2500 more than a breeder, Cocky's & Eclectus for at leat $500 more.

I think the price of many birds is the reason we don't have shelters here. Many people would have done thier homework before spending that much money and it wouldn't be too hard to on-sell.

We do have a real problem with the black market, unfortunately we have had many Macaw thefts here - the most recent was from our biggest zoo in Sydney!

I agree that the pet shops are making a tidy profit and that if you do your research a good breeder will always be the better price. An example, we did a lot of research before buying Puffin and went to numerous pet shops pricing equipment but noticed the parrots and the prices. One shop was selling a hand reared RS male ecky for $1200.
A few weeks later we found the breeder we intended to use and she told us the cost would be $700 for a hand reared female and $750 for the male. Just in conversation she mentioned she only sold to the public now as she was not happy with the conditions in most pet shops . She then told us how she used to supply three pet shops that spe******ed in birds and got around $350 per bird only to see them being onsold for $1000 plus when she was the one who put in all the hard work hand rearing them and they undid it by keeping them in cages 24 hours a day. So now she breeds less and puts more time into hand rearing and is just as careful in choosing who she gives her babies to.

Im in Canada and the prices range drastically depending on if its from a breeder or a pet store I find it very sad because usually they sell birds in pet stores for such high prices that they dont find homes or it takes a long time for someone to come along. A lot of birds in pet stores here get sick or develop behavioral issues. Not all of course but enough to take notice. Very sad.

sun conures-700-1500
green cheek conure 350-500

Macaws, greys, and cockatoos are ridiculously expensive. I found macaws for adoption and people are asking 2000+

Here in Texas...

Country you live in: Texas, US

Bird: (average price here)
CAG: $900 - $1100
Eclectus (state subspecies):
Cockateils: $30 - $50
Cockatoo (pls state subspecies): Goffin $1000, U2 $1500, Major Mitchell $4000
Amazons (pls state subspecies) :
Macaw (pls state subspecies) : B&G $1300-$1500, Red-front $1500, Blue-throat $2100
Lovebirds: $20-$40
Conures: $800
Other: Bugies $15-$20

Considering what our breeder does for each of her babies, I'm betting she makes about $2/hr.

I'm off general pet stores. They really have no expertise - in my experience. We have a really good bird only store that I like.

There may be some advantages with going through breeder but I found a few issues when I was searching for my CAG. When I was doing my searches for an African Grey (both three weeks ago as well as six months ago), I found several potential breeders but none were local and the shipping would only be about $100 to $200 difference. The other problem is that I would not be able to observe the bird's demeanor before taking it home. Not to mention all the scams I found online.

That was the reason I decided to stick with pet stores in Los Angeles, California and Phoenix, Arizona. And, after visiting and talking to different store, you get a feel for the quality of the store and how they care for the bird.

For example, the first question I was (sternly asked) when I when to Parrots Naturally was, "have you been in any other bird stores today?" and then immediately "have you held any other birds today?" Only after I said "no", I was told to use the hand sanitizer and they would bring out the bird they MAY sell to me. I was not allowed to go to the "bird area." They also told me they would probably not sell me the bird that day "because it's traumatic for the bird" and I would have to come back several times to bond with the bird as well as go through an interview process to ensure I had the proper cage, diet, and commitment levels.

In contrast, I got my CAG from a pet store were he was in a 3 foot by 2 foot cage with no perches. I decided to go with this CAG because I felt sorry for him and after visiting the store 3-4 different times, I like his personality. Also, I'm sure the CAG at the other store would be going to a good home because the owner would see to that (during the interviews). The hardest part for me was trying to use what I learned researching for signs of illness (nasal discharge, feather condition, pinning, dropping color, etc.) to tell if the CAG was relatively healthy.

So, with all the pet stores I've visited, I would consider only two ("Parrots Naturally" and the "Perfect Parrot") where selling very well care for birds. One shop was actually selling unweaned CAGs to me, a person with no prior weaning experience! This is illegal in California by the way - not to mention the risks of burned crop or aspiration.

One last thing with pet store, they have a high profit margin so when you tell them you’re planning on going with another bird at another store, they may be more flexible on the price. I did this to the store where my CAG was and told them that I was considering a younger and better cared for bird at a much lower price than they one they had in the store. I think the original price they wanted was $1,300 but they dropped it down to $950.

When I first thought about getting a bird as a pet I visited heaps of pet stores and I could not get over two or three of them where the birds just looked so sad. The difference when we went to visit our breeder for the first time was amazing. She had about seven birds of different species in her house and I fell in love with an ecky on the spot. He had been a rescue and been treated appallingly and she had worked wonders with him.

He walked down the hallway following us as we went to see the babies and pulled at the bottom of my husbands trousers and said "up please" and we were just knew we had found the right person to get our baby from.:green:

The day before we picked Puffin up I went to a pet shop to get some supplies and my daughter got really upset when she saw an Amazon in this small cage that reached out his foot as we walked past and he had the saddest look in his eyes like he was pleading with us to take him (if he hadn't cost $3000 I would have!) To this day I can't get him out of y mind
