A good book to read

I just finished reading "Why does my Parrot...?" by Rosemary Low.

Wow, this is a very interesting read. Rosemary is so knowledgeable about so may parrot species!

Now I started rereading her book "The Parrot Companion" which I read several years ago; time to read it again.

Sounds like a good present for the Missus. My thanks.

I've read several books including from Barbara Heidenreich, and find this much more informative. All problems are in alphabetical order, so it's easy to search..

If you are comfortable with behaviorism, Barbara does it better than anyone out there today. I'm not, but that does not mean that I do not respect the work she does.

Rosemary was one of the four leaders of the founding beliefs in Companion Parrot Care and her writes remain a structural foundation for my beliefs.

I would recommend Liz Wilson and Sally Blandards (spl) works.

Barbara is a relative new come and within the next ten years what she has brought to the Avian World be be measured and unless something changes will likely join the founding group.

I would recommend that you Web Search: Parrot Island Online Store in MN and work though their store's website. This couple have and continual to bring real insights and leading edge concepts that will likely place them in position number five. In my mind, they are already there!

I just read "Of Parrots and People" - it begins with the usual fascinating stories of the incredible displays of intelligence of some parrots. I mean, astounding intelligence. And then veers into the train wreck of beautiful intelligent birds meet humans looking for entertainment and money. Some reviewers didn't like it, said she is arguing against keeping pet parrots when she has one herself, but I found it a very moving, very profound, very intensely disturbing book. Read the chapter of people selling parrots on the roadsides in Mexico, the stories of bird smuggling... We have a bird, and if we didn't I would be sorely tempted to get me a little pocket parrot, and I think it's wrong to keep them as pets, too. But they are here, they are homeless, what are we to do, turn our backs?

When Oliver died, we wept for days. Weeks. OK, we both still cry sometimes, and it's been almost a year. I thought I would like to do something in his memory, something to help parrots in need. I still want to do something. I donated some money to a couple of rescues, but that is just a drop in the gigantic bucket. Start of fund rescues? Education programs? Maybe invent a new kind of cage, an un-cage without bars, just a stand surrounded by some kind of "moat" that a clipped parrot can't escape from, some shape of low wall with a large round pipe or incurring edge on top they can't climb on, so they could be safe without being enclosed in bars. Would need a kind of protected semi-enclosed space the bird could go into when desired, and perches for viewing the world and climbing around. I know it would not be suitable for all birds, even a clipped bird can fly in a panic, but there must be something possible that better than the jail cells we have today...

I have read and own other parrot books and also have "The Parrot Problem Solver" from Barbara Heidenreich, which is indeed very informative. Somehow, I just love to read Rosemary Low's style.
Kentuckienne: I immediately searched for "Of Parrots and People" and have ordered it. Looks interesting. Thanks for mentioning this book
Sailboat: I have read Sally Blanchard; couldn't find books by E.B. Cravens though.

E.B. Cravens, it is very difficult to find his books. Look for his writings in the older Parrot Mags. I will take a look at what I have, it should help in locating his writings.

I have found my copy of EB's writings. It is clearly a composite of near thirty documents that had been printed and bound together. No reference to who had done the work.
