I'm struggling with my young lovebird

Lovebird
Ive got a young lovebird (10 weeks old) about a week ago. I've had a cockatiel before but never lovebirds. He was hand reared and the lady I bought him from showed me how tame he was with her. I brought him home and gave him a day or so to adjust to his new home. His cage is fairly big with a couple of nice toys but nothing too overbearing. I wasn't expecting miricles but he seems very aloof and not ready for any contact with me whatsoever. I give him space and talk to him softly but if i open the cage he scrambles and flaps to get away from me. I've given up putting my hand to him because I don't want him to be scared or stressed. When I don't try to go to near to him he seems really happy, playing with his toys and singing beautifully. Can anyone advise where I go from here? Or do I just wait a little longer?

Welcome aboard to you and your lovebird... does he have a name yet??

Your baby is very young indeed and is having to make huge adjustments in his short life so settling in and getting accustomed to you and his new surroundings takes time. Did the breeder give you any ideas as to food rewards you might be able to use? Food bribery is your friend at this point! Lorikeets are my thing (a handful of eucalyptus flowers and they’re your friend for life!) but I think any self-respecting lovebird would probably be a sucker for a sunflower or safflower seed or millet spray to entice him closer to you.

I imagine another member will be able to give you some more specific advice but in the meantime a warm welcome to you, and we’d love some baby photos too :)

Right now this bird has no reason to trust you. You have to earn that. The best way is with food! Figure out his fav and offer it every timeyou pass his cage.
