So thursday we go to the vet for a check-up. Remington needs to also have nails and wings clipped. My question is, I didn't like the way the vet clipped his feathers last year ( he did a "show" clip, leaving the first 2 feathers unclipped) and I don't want a repeat...Remington has had his wings clipped for all 14 years of his life, he can glide down to the floor and that's is all I have seen( we have only had him 1 year), he only goes outside in a cage...Would it be ok NOT to clip him now?? I guess my greatest fear would be doorways if he were to figure it out...thoughts?? and if I do get them clipped is it the first 4-5 feathers? thanks

Rome's feathers are clipped right now, she came to me that way. I'm planning on letting them grow out though. Whatever you decide is what ever you are comfortable with, there are obvious risks when a bird is fully flighted or clipped - just depends on how you look at it. I will tell you though that Rome has the first six feathers on each wing clipped - and only about half way down the feather right now. She has been able to glide really well with this, its a very gradual decent so she is able to cover a lot of distance with this clip. She doesn't get much lift (just a little) but she is able to go from one side of the house with her current clip with no problem.

If you live anywhere near a bird store take Remmington there. I find that people who own bird stores do a better job than most vets, I think they get more practise. The woman who does my Greenwing charges $10.00 and she does a great job. She knows I take Auggie everywhere, so she clips him just right.

Hey there D~ I have been super busy with the start of a new school year and getting kids off to college...I dont use Dr Z, I use lutherville animal hospital, Dr Volk~ wasnt happy with the last trim, didnt look good and now that they are all grown back I'm wondering if I should even get them clipped.....

maybe get a light clip so he can glide but not completely fly? and if that doesnt work out get a heavier clip? it really depends on if your comfortable with the bird flying around, marty is clipped lightly because i have cats and people always coming in and out of the house. so it really depends on the situation

I went to Dr. Volk for my first avain visit. He told me her would have to give Rosie sedation to take off her leg band that was partially off already. When I went to Dr. Ho she took it off right away with no problems and no drugs. I never went to him again.
They are great at Fallston.

D~ that's really strange because Remington's previous owner said he was always sedated for wing clipping and nails trimmed and when I asked about that he said no.....weird...maybe i should bite the bullet and travel to fallston

I too take both my boys to fallston with either Dr Ho or Dr Z, both are wonderful with my boys. You should never have to place a bird to sleep to trim nails, wings, or remove leg bands, if the doctor knows what they are doing and knows how to correctly handle any bird, the restaint alone keeps the doctor in control of the birds so I'm not sure why you were told that your Macaw would have to be put asleep to work on them. Yes, I agree, go to Fallston, they're the best. Best of luck Joe

Joe, I was just saying what the previous owner did, they do have to towel him though, he got his nails and beak trimmed today, and he screamed the whole time, poor baby! I didnt let them do the wings, I will call Fallston for that

JJ I thought I saw you at Fallston one time with a Macaw I think blue who was having feet done and had a long tail pin feather. I hope you are keeping some of your lovely birds.

Thank you!

I am getting a female blue and gold Macaw as soon as she's weaned (hatched 06/05/2011), so it's great to know there is one close by. I was afraid I'd have to drive an hour to find one.
