Rate your companion Bird bite!

I have been bit by many birds, not in a mean way by them, just warning signs. But I have to say if I had to pick to be bit by any of my birds it would be by my B&G Macaw....because my little parakeet packs a punch!

Merlin's bite HURTS. I've been left crying when he's really gone to take a chunk out of me, but I've very touch sensitive because of my illness, so it might not be THAT bad.

Toko my old budgie, his bite was most certainly the worst I've experienced.

I have to admit I am more afraid of the smaller beaks than the bigger ones. Though I know a Macaw and a Too can do a lot of damage if they do get you good.. but those little small ones are fast devils!

I've never been bitten by any of my own birds before. I was bitten by a GW once years ago. He was boarding at a clinic that I was working at, it was more of a protest bite, he didn't want to go back into his cage. He bit me on my bicep, I still have a scar from it. It was more of a pinch than a bite, he could of easily taken a chunk of muscle, thankfully he was just being rotten and not angry.

Can I steal Rome? I'd love a non bitey bird

Well, my worst bite ever was from a cockatoo and I've been bitten by just about everything that can bite, lol, including a seal at the zoo when I was a small child. Oh, swans are really bad, too.

So far I haven't gotten a bad bite from Pete and nothing from Merlin. Pete has only given me some warning nips, right when I first got him, and again after he got upset by high winds coming home from the vet. He was nipping and throwing food at me for 3 days after that one.

Rowdy can latch on and grind though. I rarely get bitten, but she got me good about a year ago when she knew I was going to take her to the vet. She got an artery and I had to abort mission due to blood that went spraying everywhere. When I got to the vet with layers of bandaids on that finger, he just asked, "I take it she isn't feeling weak anymore?" And I had to say, no, she definitely has her strength back!

LOL Mayden, If it were up to Tommy she would already be on a flight to your house. Hes not a bird person but I do catch him telling her that he loves her sometimes. She honestly is one of a kind. She has never bitten or even attempts to. They don't even towel her at the vet anymore, she does what ever they want. Anytime someone comes over she cant get to them quick enough. She wants to meet EVERYONE. She will literately sit on a strangers arm for forever talking to them the entire time in her gibberish, occasionally breaking out into laughter. One time he had a friend over and when that friend went to the bathroom she ran down the hall and tried looking under the door, still talking the whole time.

I really do think the small birds bite more often, the bigger ones just seem to leave a longer lasting impression.

Oh, roxynoodle I bet that seal really hurt and of course the Too (I almost got my lip bitten my a M2 once while at a friends house, thankfully I have a quick reaction time). The seal reminds me of when I was little, I tried to get into the dolphin tank at sea world. Unfortunately my parents caught me before I was in the water completely.

swans are scary, everyone thinks they are so peaceful and docile, when i was little we were feeding swans oyster crackers (i didnt know you shouldn't feed waterfowl at the time) and i got scared and ran away, leaving my brother to fend for himself lol, the swan stretched its wings out, craned his neck, and opened his beak and gave the most menacing hiss i have every heard! my brother went flying out of there! i guess that swan was in a "fowl" mood:18:!

Worst would have to be my macaw Elvis. When I first met him he would put up a foot to step up and half the time he would latch on and not let to until you gently set him down. Not only did he lock on but he also twisted his head to twist his beak and that hurt.

Yes, as a child I was bitten often, by any number of things. I just loved animals so much but wasn't yet able to read body language or didn't know any better.

At the Cleveland Zoo back then you could buy fish and hold it out for the seals to take from your hand. My mom called my name to get me to turn for a picture and chomp! The seal got me. I think I was the reason they changed the display after that and you had to stand up on this high platform and just drop the fish down.

I also didn't know swans were mean. So when a family of them came swimming up to me me, I thought it was because they were friendly, lol! One of the parents nailed me good.

I was about 12 when bitten by the 'Too. I think it was an M2. It was in a pet store and it jumped onto my arm. Then it promptly latched onto one of my fingers and started grinding and twisting. That finger never has been quite normal since.

Oh boy. Our Grey used to just hit us with his beak but once he got me good. It actually scared me more than it hurt. We had 2 parakeets that really hurt. They would HANG on and not want to let go. The other ones never hurt me. However, my cockatiel (not hand tamed), Bella, is the worst.

geese!!!

i've never been bit or have memory of a bite as a child, but as an adult only by the nut, and there are varying degrees of oww to the *many bad words, plus muttering and some blood and skin!

anyway back to the geese, when i was first dating my man, he already had 2 kids a girl and a boy, we decided to take them out to a local farm, viking village place

the girl was 9 at the time an boy 7, dan has always been confidant around animals. jevhen on the other hand was for lack of a better word, petrified! anything that had fur/feather or scales. so we thought this was the perfect place for him to gain some confidance

well we were all sat on a bench, and jev had mastered his fear and was chasing this lone banti chicken about, we watching him giggling, like any loving family would do.

he chased this lone chicken behind some shed, and then came this high pitched blood curddling scream, followed by a chorus of very loud angry geese honks!

out shot jevhen, from behind this shed, his little legs nearly windmilling, as he tried to run from this huge flock of geese, followed by ducks and then the little chickens! all honking an quacking

i am ashamed to say we fell about laughing, the geese stopped chasing as they seemed satisfied, there ambush had worked!

why ambush?? coz all the birds went back behind the shed again, and then out popped this little chicken!

just goes to show, even little chickens can have big cousins!

My worst bite was actually from a Scarlet Macaw in a pet store in Salt Lake City. I noticed her and she was so beautiful. The owner told me go on up to her and hold her. She is very friendly. I wasn't going to pick her up like he told me, but I did walk closer to her to get a better look (She wasn't in a cage). I guess she didn't like my red painted toe nails (I had sandles on) and she ran up to me and bit my toe. OUCH!! I am sure she could of bit it a lot harder, but she did make it bleed. So Macaws kinda scare me now. My conures have nipped me but never hard enough to bleed. Our Amazon and African Grey have not bit me.

At 9 months old, my baby Neleno GW Macaw bit my ring finger on my right hand and his beak went all the way through, I thought I lost my finger for a moment, it did not hurt at all, his bite missed all nerves, veins, and bones. I had to get 6 stiches in the ER. The Doctors had to call the Police to report an Animal bite, eventhough birds cannot transmit illness to a human by bitting them. I was clipping his nails and wings at the time and was truely my fault. I should have covered his head and eyes first. live and learn. joe

Amigo has done some real damage, not to me but family members. He launched from the top of his cage once, straight to where my oldest son was sitting in a rocking chair. My son threw his hand up to protect his face and Amigo grabbed him by the ring finger, of that hand, and latched on!

All hell broke loose after that, my son jumps up screaming, flinging his arm and hand around in all directions trying to dislodge Amigo. I didn't know what to do! I stood back just horrified, watching and screaming myself, till my son took his hand and slammed Amigo on to the floor! It took three hits to dislodge him. Amigo goes limping away, I thought he had something broken, I swooped him up put him into his backroom cage and came out to my son with his hand in under the running sink water, blood everywhere. I run into the bathroom to get bandages, come back to the kitchen and my son is passed out on the kitchen floor!!

I freaked out, didn't know what to do, so first I dealt with his gushing finger and he slowly came around. He sits up and says, "What's going on?". It was very traumatic for all of us. Amigo recovered, just a little bruised, my son needed only 3 stitches and I was ready for a drink!!

Coriander (male double yellow headed amazon) does a sneak attack but then cackles and congratulates himself on getting away with it, saying, "Wow! So smart!!", so it's all good fun. Even though his impending bite is actually so obvious that I can see it many, many seconds before it happens, he enjoys it so much that I pretend he got me by surprise, and let him win. I also agree with him by responding with "Wow! So smart!!" afterwards. Rating = 2/10
Ginger (female double yellow headed amazon) doesn't bite. Rating = 0/10
Chilli (female scarlet macaw) doesn't bite. Rating = 0/10

You don't need to be bitten by your bird, if you don't want to.

So far I haven't been bitten badly by my own birds, but a tiel at the pet store I was working at had gotten loose and wasn't tame well I walk over thinking it would be easy to pick her up, but as soon as I had her in my hand her beak went right under my thumb nail and started to pry it up. While also grinding her beak I was shocked at the amount of pain I was in.

smaller beaks are definately more painful in general haha! been through that a lot with
some lovebirds. Klaus never bites though, but he did bite me once. he was on my hand
and someone he didn't like was next to me so he bit me hard, telling me to get rid of
said person. XD

There is a pattern that within any parrot group, the largest species bite much less than the smaller species. So, if you are interested in macaws and don't want to be bitten, go for the Greenwinged, Hyacinth or Buffon's macaws over the Hahn's and the the Noble's macaws. If you are interested in conures and don't want to be bitten, go for the Golden conure rather than the Green-cheek conure. If you are interested in cockatoos and don't want to be bitten, go for the Palm cockatoo rather than the corella. I've never seen anyone on the internet asking for advice about a bitey Palm cockatoo.
