Rescue bird

Hi...I'm new here. I have been visiting lots of websites and this seems like a good one. I have several birds...African grey...BG macaw and a greenwing, both of which are young.

2 weeks ago I got a call from a man who had found two birds a grey and a scarlet macaw. They were in terrible shape...the macaw had picked himself like a clucked chicken and has destroyed his primaries and tail feathers. The vet checked him and gave him a clean bill. The bird cannot use his wings to balance, likes to scream at times and would eat all day if I kept food with him all day. My problem is this....what should I do with him when fully healthy? 3 macAws is a chore. Any suggestions?

Maybe you could contact a bird rescue close to you? The rescues have resources and contacts and such that private citizens do not necessarily have. They are used to taking in birds from all kinds of situations, so this would most likely not be anything new for them. If you're feeling overwhelmed, maybe you should contact them now and they could at least take the Macaw off your hands for you. Rescues also do wonders for finding the right home for the right bird.

You can send him my way, I'll pay for the plain ticket and crate (not kidding.) I have a blue and gold macaw, and an empty large macaw cage. I also have two CAGS, one of which has plucked herself like a chicken (she was a rescue.)

There are also a lot of people here who can help place birds if you don't want to go out of state. Or you can contact a few rescues and see if they can help you, since you're 'fostering' perhaps they can help with the process of screening applicants?

I vouch for Safira as a good bird mom who takes such care of each one of them.

after thinking about it, I wonder if the scarlet wants to eat all the time to help keep himself warm since his feathers are gone? Without a picture, I don't know how plucked he is, but my CAG Gracie is almost completely naked. She has some feathers growing in, mostly down along her back but she's got no tail, and only one or two raggedy gray feathers on her wings. If you look through the Congo section of this site, or just through some of my old posts there are pictures.

Anyways, she eats twice as much (pellet wise) than my other CAG, and weighs less. The Vet said she probably would eat a little more throughout the day to help with the energy it takes in keeping warm.. and she will eat an entire bowl of pellets in less than 24 hours. I keep her fully supplied, because she does look thin and I can imagine is a little cold at times(my house is at 70 degrees right now.)

Anyways, just a thought I had about him eating all day.

Isnt there something that you can put on a bird if it's plucking , like a shirt or something ?
Could that work to keep them a little warmer too ?
