Oh Dear...

I just got home from work and was informer that our neighbors (who own two CAGs) want me to bail out their friends who are way over their heads. They bought two B&Gs and are now looking to rehome them. I'm all for it but what can I expect from adding two macaws to my flock and did I mention they're a 'breeding pair'? I'm ok with the responsibility that comes with having them, but I want to know what I might run into with 2 macaws that I won't deal with with 2 conures. Thanks!

From what i know. Most breeders your not going to handle them at all. Are u going to breed them. How long have they been together. How old are they.

Most breeding birds don't make good pets~ would you be willing to have 2 large birds that would probably stay in their cage and you would just feed, clean and take care of them?

Guess I should specify a few things: I haven't been given much info on the birds yet. I'm going to speak to my neighbor and talk to her tomorrow. And when I said 'breeder birds' I was told the guy bought one bird recently and then the other and they laid a non fertile clutch. So they aren't true breeders (which I would not take in my current position) and I don't plan on breeding them. The owners bought the birds cause they're pretty and can talk and have no knowledge about how to care for them so I'm guessing they gave the birdies a nest cause that's what birds sleep in.

That's all I know so far and when I have more imformation I will post it. If I do come to find the pair are true breeders, I at least know someone who can take the birds and give them a better place to live than a dark room where they're ignored.

First thing you need to do is whoop those peoples a$$e$ for being completely irresponsible and having it effect the birds!!! Sorry I had to vent! I'm getting so tired of seeing this type of thing over and over.

I would love to MollyGC. I would really love to. The fact they're so ignorant about the beautiful creatures is what makes me want to take them so they'll have a good home, lots of toys, good food, and love. Unfortunetly, if the owners think they're gonna get money out of me, they'll be dissapointed. I won't pay for the birds since I have my own bills, loans, and am saving for a house. We'll see what I can find out tomorrow.

Just got another bit of info about the macaws: they're free. Everything is free. I saw pictures and they are beautiful but the owners are just over their heads. I want them so bad but I'm not sure it's a good move for me. Gah my brain!

You can't turn down that offer. Those birds need someone that can take care of them the right way and provide a proper life for them. As long as you can afford to take care of them and spend done time with them, I say go for it. I would if they lived close to me, but it seems not a lot of people I have met on here live close to San Diego.

Yeah I've pretty much decided I'll get them. I've got to meet them first though cause my dad is worried they're gonna eat me alive or something but that's a non-parrot person for you lol. I know they need an experienced owner so I guess this will be my trial by fire to gain that title. Does mastering the proper rituals for worshipping conures count? Lol I do have one thing that's stumping me concerning macaws: how do I get them home? Are there carriers that big or will we just have to deal with a slightly squished tail for a bit?

You can use a dog carrier if you need to. I know lots of people that do. It is a short ride too, right?

I've seen large dog crates used as carriers for macaws.

I think the questions you need to ask yourself is, do you have time for them? Do you have the money for them? This includes food, toys, perches, vet visits, etc. Do you have the space for them?

If all of that is yes, then go and meet them! Decide if you are capable of dealing with them.

If any answer is No, then you might want to hold off for now, but it wouldn't hurt to see if you could help the birds find a more appropriate home with someone more knowledgeable.

I'm not worried about affording the things that the macaws will need. I wouldn't be saying yes if I couldn't afford them properly or think I'm capable of giving them the attention they need. I'll just cut back my overtime hours a week so that I can come home earlier. I still have to spend time with my girls so it'll be interesting juggling them for the first month or until I can have the girls in the same room as the macaws (obviously not on or around the macaw cage, duh).

Before I brought Con home, I reach everything I could get my hands on pertaining to conures and it spilled over to every other species as well and I always knew that I'd get a B&G so I'm not clueless about how to care for them and what to expect. I've been brushing up, going through all my bird books and even bought a few just about macaws but those can only help you understand a bird so much which is why I asked some experienced macaw owners my questions.

If I do get the pair, expect me to have more questions

we used a dog crate to bring Remington home, 4 1/2 hr car trip...we also rented a cargo van in order to bring his 2 large cages and play stand home, Good luck!

Finally someone on here that lives out in beautiful So Cal, where gas is as expensive as gold it seems like..lol. I know after Christmas, my wife wants to look for another Grey for her, so if you know of anyone looking to rehome one our a breeder let me know.

Right?!?! Gas is Crazy! Even on the base (we are military also (navy)) I will keep my eyes and ears open for a grey for you!
