Hi, my name is Emily and it looks like I've become a parrot owner! My friend found a sun conure that had been in a tree for a couple days. She brought him to me and I haven't found his previous owner. It appears he was abandoned but I'm not sure why. He isn't a screamer (from what I've seen), he's very sweet, he has a band on his leg, and I suspect he is young. I had a cage already from a monk parakeet that decided it preferred my dad over me, and my husband has been wanting a parrot, so we were ready to accept a new family member! Now I'm here to see if I can learn anything about our new friend!

Hello Emily and welcome!
Your new little Sun is beautiful:) Have you named him yet? Suns do have a reputation for their screaming so that is wonderful that he is not doing that yet. You may want to take him to an avian vet to have him checked out since he was outside with wild birds to make sure everything is okay.
Glad you joined us!

Welcome Emily! Congrats on your new addition! He's adorable. That's great that he's not a screamer. Ducati is just now learning inside voices. Like Terry said, I would take him to a vet as soon as you get a chance since he was rescued from outside. He looks like such a little snuggle bug!

Wow! I wish that would happen to me! Don't get too attached as the owner may show up...however enjoy the little guy! Lucky you!

I've been searching pet lost and founds and craigslist, and I called the only avian vet close to where he was found. No luck. I took him to the vet today (one to have him scanned for micro chip and two because he's been sneezing) and he has an upper respiratory infection and no micro chip. We have antibiotics and, after searching for his owner for a week, I have decided he probably got tossed out and nobody is looking for him. My friend who found him said he had been in the same tree at her apt complex for two days and came down eagerly to her. She has been on the lookout for lost parrot signs but hasn't seen any. It's a shame if someone did toss him out, but I'm very happy to have him. One man's trash is another's treasure!

Hi Emily, welcome to the forum! Your little sun conure is a real cutie, hope he feels better soon. I have heard of people releasing their parrots to be rid of them, but I like to think that's rare. It's more likely the little guy escaped accidentally and got lost. I'd keep looking for the owners for a few more days at least.

I will continue to check craigslist periodically and if someone contacts the vet I called, they have my contact information. There were a couple days, the second and third day I had him, when I looked through every pet lost and found I could find and had no luck. He had been missing for at least 5 days, since he had been in the tree for two days and came to me on the third. Now he has been missing at least 11 days, and still no luck finding someone looking for him. He was flighted when he was found, and when he would fly around the house he would land on me or my husband every time. We have clipped his wings so he doesn't hurt himself or worse. I will admit, it will be very hard if I find that he does have an owner who misses him. The first few days we had him he was like a "stray," we cared for him, provided him food and shelter and a bit of play time, but he was a passer through who was waiting to be reunited with his family. These last couple days, after believing it less likely we would find his previous owners, we have opened our hearts and he has become a part of the family. We named him, fixed up our old parrot cage for him, and fell in love with him. I will continue to check craigslist, but between you and me, I'm hopeful I don't find anything.

Hope he feels better soon! I would say after 11 days and you haven't seen or heard of anybody looking for him, he was probably tossed out. That's kind of a long time to go without noticing a beloved pet is missing. I would still keep looking for maybe another week, but I'm thinking it's not likely they will turn up. I hate to think that somebody just threw him out. They are beautiful birds, but unfortunately there are cruel people in this world. Hoping the best for you and him!
