Amazon male,
Hi... And thankyou for adding me togiour forums.

I'm Jayne, and I've registered here especially to learn more and more about my newly acquired pet!

I am known in my area, as the lady who cares for peoples unwanted pets. Up to now, I currently have 3dogs, 3guinea pigs, a hamster and 6ferrets. I have cared for and rehomed numerous dogs, ferrets, chinchillas...

I have recently acquired a lovely green amazon parrot named William. Williams owner has sadly passed away at a ripe old age, and now I have taken William on as my own.

William is a male, he's around 60years old... An apart from him nursing an old broken wing ... I don't really know much more about him (that's where u guys n dolls step in see...)

I've had William now for 4days. He's currently eating a seed mix... And I'm giving him fruit and veg. William allows me to put my hand in the cage and feed him... And each time my family sit at the table for a meal ... William actively responds with "Hello... Hellollolllo... Heeeeelllooo there!" ( ...I've recently learnt that his elderly previous owner give him a chip as a treat... And William does this "hello" when he wants a chip)

Now I need advice on all kinds. I really don't know where to begin. I've never owned a parrot... And all I was told when I was given William (in his small cage) ...was he hates kids... Eats chips...swears...calls everybody "mamma" ...an is not allowed toys!

Well I for one... If that was my life as a parrot.. I'd want to change it! Wouldn't you??? ... So here I am... This is me... (Where do I begin...eeeek?) Xx

Hello and welcome to you and William! I'm having a hard time seeing him in the picture, but he may be a Yellow Crowned. Do you have a closer picture?
I have a Double Yellow Headed Amazon who is between 52 and 62, and it boggles my mind that she is almost as old as I am! I'm so glad you took William in:)
Here is a link on changing his diet over to start you off with:

It sounds like he is going to need a bigger cage, and toys as well. Don't be discouraged if he doesn't play with them at first, sometimes it takes awhile, and you can be creative and let him see you playing with them. Be aware he also may be afraid of them at first. With one f my other amazons I had to hang toys outside of his cage until he got used to them and then slowly move them closer until they could go in the cage without freaking him out.
How long have you had him?

Hi Terry... Thankyou so much for your welcome and reply. I'm sorry that I didn't write back sooner, I'm still finding my way around this place. I didn't think anybody had left me a reply either, I was expecting like a notification to pop up (like on the social sites...I won't name them!).

I'm looking at a bigger cage from an online pet shop, which has a decent returns policy. The cage that William is in at the moment is roughly 50x30 an roughly 50tall. He looks a bit squished but seems happy.

Wow...thankyou for that link...I'm going to take a look there now. I've got William on a seedmix at the moment, but I've noticed him only eating the peanuts, sunflower seed and pumpkin seed out of it. I don't suppose you know of any nugget type food brands??

I'm not too clever with this technology...uploading pics ...I'll get my boy try upload a clearer pic for u in this thread. William is mostly green...red on his shoulders...bits of red an blue on his wing and then a yellow bit on his front head above his beak. X

Hi Jaynie, no worries! For the cage, that is in centimetres? If so, I bet he is looking kind of squished:( That's awesome that the shop near you has a good return policy, since he may have no desire to switch cages. Once he settles in with you, I would try it, though.
I'm not sure what brands of food are available where you are, but try to find a good pellet. I mix pellets in with seeds, and the birds eat them, but sometimes it takes awhile. I would not remove seeds completely form his diet, at least for right now, as he may stop eating completely.

Here is a good link for uploading pictures to a thread:

Judging by your description, I still bet on Yellow Crowned:) I have one, too!

Hi Jaynie, a very warm welcome to you and William! Sounds like your new adventure is off to a great start! Thank you for taking in a senior parrot, william looks like a charmer.

I'm not trying to promote a pet supply company but this one does have a variety of parrot food, until you learn the brands William prefers. Nutriberries are a good way to transition a bird from seeds to pellets and most parrots like them.
