red winged parrot
hi all
I am bill.
very very sad!!!
we had an Australian red winged parrot for 28+ years.
(our only bird or animal for 25 years)
my wife has had birds before that though.
he was in great health, free to fly around every home he lived in,
strong, intelligent, inquisitive, beautiful ect.
from what I have read, life expectancy was to 20-25 years
and 30 was unheard of.
so we must have been doing something right.
he never went to a vet even once, he was saved by my wife when he was a baby from a Very carless person who almost starved him do death.

yesterday morn his legs wouldn't work right and he was sleepy, got him to vet, xray/bloodwork, got him home, would not get out of carrier (clamshell type), we could see he was in shock and breathing fast and we knew.

at 9 pm I kissed him and he kissed me back.:(
at 930 he was gone.

I could go on for days telling stories about how he put himself to bed every night, pooped in his baskets in every room, never chewed or bit hard, was quiet 99.9% of the time, and knew hand signals.

we need another best friend, we are empty nesters in our 50s
and the thought of no little buddy in the house is killing us.

bird people......we need to talk.
we need another little guy.

extremely heartbroken here
peace
bill

Bill,

I am so sorry for your loss. Our birds ARE members of the family and it hurts when they are sick or pass away. RIP little one.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to the forums, Bill. I so wish it were under better circumstances.

My deepest condolences for the loss of your treasured companion. You are in plentiful company with folks who have lost beloved parrots and deeply empathize. The sorrow is palpable and paralyzing, but grief is a process without an ultimate destination. Some folks find it comforting to know the cause of passing with a necropsy. (autopsy) In this case it seems likely due to age and a significant internal process that was irreversible. In time his memories will foster far more joy than sadness, and you will never forget.

When the time is right, and you'll know it, there will be a special bird who will benefit from your love and care.

You have come to the right place and will find arms full of those who understand and have stood next to their feathered companion's resting place. Please know that all those years that your buddy had been building and expanding his place in your hearts, he had been building place for yet another. When you are ready to step forward there are knowing arms happy to support and guide.

A special pray for you my Friend from an Amazon Snob. Copied from the Amazon Forum's Thread Titled: I Love Amazons - .... When you have a little time, stop by and read the many Segments that support loving and living with Parrots in general.

Best wishes and Warm Feather Hugs!

I offer you this Segment (Pray): “Passing of a Feathered Friend,”

As this Thread may likely exist far beyond my involvement in All Things Amazon. I believe that like the leading Segment of this Thread, a lasting testimony (Pray) to the Amazons that have shared our home, expanded our Love, and Understanding of Amazons should be part of this work.

It is not an issue of not wanting to visit and more importantly providing words of support as part of the Bereavement Forum, but my own difficultly in fully facing our many losses over the years. It is a reality of what we have committed ourselves too and each loss returns us to that clarity. When one opens their home to the very sick and very poorly cared for, losses are part of the commitment. I ask not forgiveness, but understanding of not often enough in sharing your grief. For those of you who loss a Loving Feather Family Member, I offer you this Pray “Passing of a Feathered Friend,” that we provide our Loved Ones!

This Segment is Rated: To be Read in the company of close Friends and Family.

May Peace find and stand with you as part of your loss my friends…

Passing of a Feathered Friend
Provided By: Steven (SailBoat), November 2016

“All of us feel such deep sadness when our Parrot friends die, and because they are Animals and not Humans, we are at a loss for words. Often, it is only other Parrot owners who can understand the depth of the loss that we feel with this complex, loyal, and loving creature. Resulting from such a loss, I have placed feelings and emotions into words and found verse to console the loss of my Cleo and since her, other sweet Amazons, in turn; I hope it will speak for all of you.” - Steven

You left this world so quickly. I can hardly comprehend your leaving. Yet there, in my hands, your still body rested — no longer your home. So much I have learned, so much you have taught, your purpose a full measure beyond your size. Comprehensions of your loss still a mist but yet, I know you are whole and happy - now beyond Rainbow Bridge. And so busy you must be upon your green wings, guiding angles to those of us yet to cross. With in my ear, I still hear you, those special sweet sounds of comfort and contentment:

“Do not stand by my grave and weep my friend.
I am not here. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the gentle summer rain.
When you wake in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry my friend.
I am not there. I did not die.”

My pray for you my beloved feathered friend:

“May your body nourish this earth.
May your soul find release and contentment.
May you fly high and free upon wings of spirit.
Rest in peace little green one.”

The love and tender warmth of you is a un-full-fill-able void.
I do so much thank-you for creating a space for another, a special place next to yours’.

In remembrance of Cleo, (Estimated) Spring 1959 - May 2003

I am so sorry for what you have lost.
You have come to the right place for sure.
Just today I lost my RLA Pacho. I had her for 27 years. Other than a slight feather plucking problem a few years ago she had never been sick.
I pray that you find a little buddy (or a little buddy finds you) soon.
Nothing can replace what has been lost but a new life to focus on does wonders.

Hello Bill, a shame you joined us at this juncture, we are always sad to hear that a loved parrot has flown over the Bridge. A lot of us share the feelings when a loved avian buddy is gone. Let the memories remain, and when your family is ready, I am sure another feathered friend will need you.

I had never heard of a red wing parrot, I had to look them up. I was trying to determine what group of parrots they belong to, the males are diffeernet coloration then the females?

I would normally thank every one by name individually but I cant,
just too many and too complicated for me at this time.

I needed to be with my own kind, like all of you, the ones who get it,
people who's souls have been deeply touched by the gifts these wonderful
animals give us.
I was a member here years ago for a short period and I recalled being welcomed here, so....here I am again.

after talking with my wife, we both agree we need to hear the
patter of little claws on the floor again, but we both agree we were
terribly spoiled and extremely lucky to have the feathered family member
we were blessed with.

she asked if i could find another......i broke down again.
i know we will never find another Australian red winged parrot in the usa.
i believe they are about as rare as can be.
we seen one once 20 years ago at a show, i seen 2 for sale in searching,
but the adds were 3-5 years ago.

our next bird will most likely out live us, and that's great, we cant go through this heartbreak again.
btw his name was Biemba (Italian for little girl), even though he was a male.
please don't ask for a picture yet, i cant bare to see him.

my thoughts are...
once we completely clean and paint the house, it will be time to start looking seriously for our new family member, but what we wish to find
will be next to impossible to achieve.
to find another bird....or any bird with his great traits will be impossible!!
at least the house wont look like a snow globe for a little while.
:01:
we say our final goodbye's tomorrow.
:02:
Most of all....
i cant thank you all enough for the kindness and prayers from all of you!

it helped me greatly.

thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!

FYI: Be very open to letting this next Parrot choose you! When the time is right, any number of us can go into how this works and why it is just so wonderful! It is only important that you open yourselves to this concept at this point!

Warm Feather Hugs!

So very sorry for your loss of Biemba, to know you are loved in life is one of gods great gifts and you gave him that gift and vice versa. May he forever fly free.

I am sure that there is a little feathered being out there waiting for you.

Welcome to the forums, you are very welcome.

hello again all,
we put him to rest in our garden this morning.
that was tough.
my wife stayed outside (gardening to keep her mind off it)
and here is something you all wont believe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 wild parrots flew by!!!!
I know we have them here in Chicago, but I only seen one once in 10 years!
unbelievable!!!!

we finally got the blood test and xray report this afternoon.....
kidney over 200
everything very elevated
possible tumor by legs.

he didn't show any real noticeable illness other than being a little sleepy
the day before, that was common for him at this time of year,
when the weather starts to change he would grow new feathers
and want to go to sleep a little earlier and nap more often.

my thoughts are when he become old, he cant fight off everything as well
and it takes over.

what I read in a few web searches say 15-20 years in wild.
18-25 in captivity.

another
18-25

another
20-25+ "30 was unheard of"

wiki said 50......I don't believe that and neither did others!

Darn this is rough to go through!

its our big anniversary at the end of October and she suggested
we just take that money and get another.

I want this badly and so does she.
our search for a new family member will start sooner than I expected.

It sounds like the parrot fly by gave you there version of "the missing man formation".

I am sure it was no accident.

Take care.
