Question New to amazons

I recently took in an amazon parrot that is roughly thirty years old. The owner of the bird passed away several years ago and he has been passed around several times scince. The last stop he made he was severly abused and neglected. He is not very freindly, in fact he is a jerk. Understandably so after what hes been through. I have never owned a bird and honestly have no idea what to do with him. The bird is realy cool, and I cant stand to see him keep bouncing from home to home, so hes stuck here I geuss. Can anybody help me and give me some advise to make this birds life a little more enjoyable and get him to trust that I wont hurt him?

Re: New to amazons

Thank you for taking in this bird. Please give him a nice name and not call him jerk. I suggest you get the book Parrots for Dummies. It is a very good reference when you are starting out and afterwards. Amazons can be tricky so you will need to do your homework. They tend to eat well and may get overweight. They need lots of attention, stimulation and one on one time with you outside of cage. There are many things in the home that are toxic to birds that you should learn such as teflon coatings on anything, candels, room sprays, plug in, cigarette smoke or any other type of smoke. Please enjoy his company. Birds and wonderful creatures to share your life with.

Re: New to amazons

If Bo turns out to be anything like Fred, you're going to be glad you adopted him.Do read what you can in relation to Amazons. They can be a little difficult, and it's easy to create behavioral problems without knowing it!

Psssst...Amazons can usually be "jerks" at some time or another. Just don't let him hear you say it!!!! LOL!

Re: New to amazons

That was very generous of you to give him a home. My wife and I adopted a DYH Amazon last year and the other comments are in line with our experience as well. We were warned that Amazons can be very hormonal and challenging birds, but we really enjoy the little man. I have included a link to our blog that recaps our experience with "Popeye."

It will take patience to earn his trust but they are amazing birds. Hopefully his personality will shine with time.
