hi all!

hi there!
me and my partner took on our first parrot at the start of december last year.
a 14 week old pineapple conure we've named Yo-Yo.

we've been planning having a parrot for years and finally took the step.
She's having her first vet trip next week hopefully, with a local avian vet (we dont actually know the gender yet).
absolutely perfect so far, but the people we got her from had the conures on a seed only diet, and we're trying to convince her that vegetables are delicious! (i totally get where shes coming from).
her feathers have some brown spots on them, i think its from a nutrient deficiency, i will see what the vets thoughts are! shes on calcivet twice a week. and ive swapped her main dry food from seeds to harrisons lifetime and a couple of crushed nutriberries mixed in. which she seems to enjoy!
attached a little pic of her!

nice to meet you all!

Re: hi all!

Welcome to you and Yo-Yo! She is adorable .

Sounds like you are on the right track with diet - lots of great threads here about “convincing” them to eat veggies so you should be able to get some ideas and strategies to try. Many of us live with conures, so feel free to ask any questions that might come up.

i absolutely will be! we're both quite nervous to do anything wrong in raising her.
ive spent more time than id like to admit 'nibbling' on vegetables. which is slow but seems to yield results

we're slightly worried about the terrible twos when that eventually rears its head. so we're primarily looking in to things we can do early in her life to ease the pain!

Re: hi all!

Congratulations, your newest family member is a beauty! Giving a bird a healthy diet is a sweet gift. Great work with the fresh veggies, I've had seed addicts refuse the good stuff for months but with patience every one of them finally accepted chop on a daily basis.

Re: hi all!

Welcome to you and Yo-Yo, what a beautiful face!!

You've done well by switching to Harrison's, and the quest for a more vegetable/fruit based diet is admirable. This thread may be of interest: Converting Parrots to a Healthier Diet - Tips

Another technique recognizes birds as flock-eaters, and you are the Alpha member. Make two bowls of "chop", one for Yo-Yo and a second for you. Begin eating and bring out your hidden 8 year old with demonstrable enjoyment, Mmmm noises, bobbing your head, etc. You'd be surprised how effective group eating can be!
