Hi everyone! My name is Maggie and I’m bird mom to an 8 month old violet English Budgie named Morty and a 3 month old Rosy Fronted Conure named Loki!

I’m also mom to a wonderful 9 year old daughter named Lily, who is Morty’s bff!

We brought Loki home today and he or she (we find out in a few days) has been extremely active in the cage. We’ve been keeping things as calm as possible, but this little tyke is on the go and seems to want to exit the cage and get all of the attention! I’ve been sticking to my guns and not encouraging his screaming and cage biting, but he or she is so different from Morty (who is a little lump on a log). We love Loki already, but didn’t expect such attention-seeking behavior a mere 3 hours straight after being brought home. Has anyone else experienced this with their new baby? He started eating and drinking within 5 minutes of being in his new cage, started playing with his toys, flapping his wings, stretching, chatting, squawking, and occasionally screaming (which was expected). I am open to any and all advice for getting Loki to settle down a bit. Is he playing or is he super stressed out? What should I ignore and what should I encourage? Should I leave him be for a day or two or more or should I start handling him now (he’s no stranger to human hands, although he is rather mouthy). He seems like such a little clown and is full of mischief. I’d love to hear other experiences with silly babies.

Morty, on the other hand, is calm and content and loves everyone, even our two dogs who are so gentle with him (he preens their fur).

Thanks in advance for tips, tricks, advice, and stories! We’re happy to be here and love our feather babes. :rainbow1::blue2:

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
A warm welcome Maggie and to your flock! Unfamiliar with conures but many members are and can render helpful advice.

Loki is clearly well socialized and eager to adapt. May need to slow the action a bit during the "honeymoon phase."

Not sure the housing arrangement, but consider separating Morty from Loki to prevent potential size differential jealousy or injury. You may find compromise with direct and constant supervision. In fact, a 30 day quarantine for health purposes is advised in most situations.

Please exercise the utmost caution permitting interaction between any bird and dogs/cats. While they may appear respectful, accidents or mood changes can occur in a nanosecond and result in tragedy. Our Bereavement Forum is sad testament to horrific heartbreak.

Sounds like he's excited and happy... and eager to interact. Assuming his squawks are chortly/chatty/chirpy sounds and not a loud, repeating screech which would be an alarm "I'm scared" sound.
Conures are such energetic, clownish, fun, social birds... don't expect Loki to ever be boring. :D

Welcome to the forums! How about posting some pics of the little cuties?

Welcome. If he is a baby ( just weaned) they need more attention and reassurance. Conures aren't going to just sit in a cage all day. They should be a part of everything you do, sim to have them out of the cage six hours a day.
This is a link to a great article, covers so much, I'm not a fan of clicker training tho I just say good bird instead of clicking.

Thank you everyone! I do have my budgie and conure caged in their own cages and absolutely supervise my birds when they interact with the dogs. I watch them like a hawk and keep the dogs at a distance OR keep a hand on them while Morty preens their fur. Even if I get up to go to the kitchen in my apartment, Morty either comes with me or goes back to his cage. As sweet and gentle as my pooches are, they are animals and all animals can be unpredictable.

Loki the baby conure is such a sweetheart, but he definitely lives up to his name! He loves people, but likes to pinch fingers or try to separate fingernails off of fingers (ooooowwww). He’s a little knuckle head and we just love him (or her)! So excited to be part of the forum!
