During the month of May I noticed blood in Ringo's stools.

We took him to the vet, said he had a virus of the intestines called Colitis.

He was given an in injection and med's which helped.

We took him back to the vet 3 times, he got injections and more med's.

Within a few days it had disappeared.

This morning I was there when he passed a stool I NEARLY DIED

I have never seen it this bad

2014-08-27080504_zpsfda6cd3a.jpg

With Colitis they vomit and loose weight.

Ringo's weight is normal, he has never vomited and he is so cheerful and playful all the time.

He is feed only NutriPhase,
never eaten human food, as we were advised.
His feeding bowl is cleaned 2 times a day.

He drinks water as usual.
His water is changed 2 times day.

He got an injection and de-worming pills.
The vet was not too concerned as he did not have a fever !!!!

Vet said it should disappear within about 4 days !!!!!!

Is there anything else I can do, making sure Ringo is healthy.

Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Poor Ringo!!! :(

Ant, colitis in cats can have several causes: Bacterial infection, allergies, stress, viral infection (i.e. feline leukemia), intolerance of food, parasites, etc.

Since this isn't Ringo's first (or second or third) bout with Colitis, I think it's necessary for your vet to try and find the underlying cause. CBC, testing liver, kidney, pancreas, x-rays, possibly ultrasound.

Thanks for the quick reply Wendy

The vet said give him a few days and see how it goes.

I am just worried it reappears again.

If so he will have to have many tests etc.

We will do whatever we have to.

Just want my baby to be healthy and happy

I pray that this all works out. I would too want full blood work analysis done, since this keeps reoccurring.
Good luck, and give Ringo extra lovins, sometimes that helps too!

In 2008 I brought home a male and female Ragdoll cats. Female was year and half and the male was over 2 years old.

The male had serious pooping problems and was small for a Ragdoll. He weighed less than the female. I brought him to the vet as his poops were always liquid like, smelled so bad people could smell it just walking in the door of my home, would track the poop all over my home I was cleaning up after him months after I returned him and he began to urinate in the bathtub and sink drains.

He was diagnosed with Colitis and I was advised to give him a certain kind of food (I can't remember what kind though). He was prescribed antibiotics for a suspected urinary tract infection.

I worked very hard in the attempts to get Benito well again. He would recover for a few days but go right back to having issues with using the litter box. It ended up being such a vicious cycle and I was very new to cat ownership I felt like I was way over my head with helping Benito and he was slowly destroying my home with his issues. However Benito had such a wonderful personality and was such a beautiful cat it was very hard to watch his health continue to fail. I use to cry with the frustrations of my failure to help Benito.

Finally I had to call the breeder and tell her I had to return him. I was not getting anywhere with helping his health issues and I could no longer handle the smell and messes he was making. I was never able to get weight on him either. I felt like he was slowly dying because of my ignorance.

I did a lot of research on Colitis and learned that it is a condition for life. If you can get the cat to the point where it is managed that is a feat I was never able to get Benito to. I KNOW people who have cats that can manage the condition getting the cat to the point they have little to no issues with the condition. Unfortunately I was not one of those people and even to this day I feel like I had failed with my inability to help Benito.

I pray you can get Ringo's Colitis in control and manage the condition where Ringo can continue to be healthy for you. There is nothing as scary as seeing blood in the stool with the want to rush him to the vet's. Because of my experience I feel your compassion, pain and panic with his Colitis flairs up.

Many hugs for you and Ringo.

I agree on the full work up at the vet. Even if the meds make him better for now, I'd want to get to the root of the problem. Good luck with your sweet kitty. Hope Ringo feels better soon, and you can get his symptoms managed well. :)

So sorry you had to return Benito I can just imagine how you felt and still are feeling. I know the feeling of giving up believe me.

We are doing our best for Ringo, keeping a close eye in him.

Must report back to the vet in a few days.....

Hugs to you as well !!!

To keep you all updated on Ringo

He seems fine (THANK GOD) no more blood
Still keeping an eye on him constantly.

He is eating and drinking as usual LIKE A PIG LoL

He is as playful and cheerful as usual, was playing with two dogs in our apartment building a little while ago. He had a ball.

Shame and all Mishka says about Ringo for the last few days was "Oh shame Mommy Ringo is sick". Bless his beautiful soul, he loves his brother so so so much.

Happy he's doing better. Wonder if stress can aggravate colitis? Maybe something different was introduced into his environment, strange person, or animal?

I'm so glad sweet Ringo is feeling better, Ant! And poor Mishka, so concerned about his little bro. Hope Ringo continues to do well and his vet is able to pinpoint the exact condition and if not cure it, at least manage it, so Ringo can continue to be a happy, healthy kitty.

Hi Mango

Nothing new has been introduced to Ringo at all, this has been an on going diagnoses since May this year.

Ringo is the most placid cat, he never gets stressed, hisses or cries out.

He interacts with two dogs on our apartment building, the all play together beautifully. They have a set time, on a Saturday at 2pm. Ringo lays on the floor, the dogs come to him and sniff him, he just meows out to them, then they run around. It is awesome to see friends playing together.

Does Ringo have access to the outdoors, Ant? Maybe he eats lizards or something that disagrees with him? Our cats keep catching the common little fence lizards and eating them, then they suffer the consequences (diarrhoea). Just wondering, anyway.

I'm so glad to hear Ringo's feeling well and happy again. Seamus and Genny say 'G'day'. :)

Hi Trish

Thanks for your concern

When Ringo goes out we are always with him, he has never eaten anything strange. He goes out when we return home from work for about 15 minutes.
On a Saturday he play with two dogs in our apartment building for about 30 minutes.

Poor Ringo!!!

Not sure how it is with animals, but my HUSBAND has Ulcerative Colitis, and it's the sort where the problem is his immune system. His immune system actually attacks his colon so he gets ulcers, therefor passing stool, blood and pus. (GROSS i know!) So the only way to control it is for him to eat certain foods (anything dairy makes his Colitis flare up) and take immuno suppressants i think they're called? Plus steroids and inner-health-plus (good bacteria)(his medication pile is large..) So when the Dr gave him stuff to hep his immune system get stronger (as he was getting ill often) that just made the colitis worse......

And apparently once you have colitis, it's a lifelong illness. It'll go down and not be bothersome and then randomly it'll flare up and be excruciatingly painful, then it'll go down, up, down.

So I really don't know what the Vets will decide to do, but i hope they can figure out something that won't destroy him should be have to take it the rest of his life.
