A cockatiel, a bourke, and three budgies
I've been visiting a local bird breeder for advice on birds. He is very kind and breeds cockatiels, budgies, canaries, and conures. I go to see him every Sunday, and last time he told me about Splayed leg, and egg bound "symptoms". He uses a diffuser with 100% natural oils like I do, he's been using it for 36 years and never had a bird die from it. He gave me some oils his vet recommend, so I could use them with my birds. I've been visiting for a couple weeks now, and it has been interesting. He showed me how to hand feed rejected babies. I wanted to breed my birds, but I think this is a better way to go. Just visiting a breeder, he even let me hand feed one of the baby conures. Like most bird owners know, I know that females can lay eggs with or without a male, so the egg bound advice will be very helpful since I have 2 females.
This is very helpful, and a good experience if I want to become an avian veterinarian.

I just wanted to share a bit of what I've been up to lately.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Sounds like an excellent opportunity to learn a lot about birds from someone highly experienced. My hunch is fewer young people are showing such an interest, and the breeder is probably very happy to share this information.

Good for you, great experience for future reference. Just remember that one Breeders advice and methods are theirs only, and a second or third one may have different things to tell you. But kudos to you for taking the time to visit and learn.

That's great to be able to learn hands-on with someone who has many years of experience with birds. The forum is great, but I feel as though there are some things that are better understood in-person. It's great he's willing to teach you, too!
