Awaiting my baby blue front...
...that I have pneumonia. I've been sick for almost three weeks now with a terrible cough and stuff. Went to hospital tonight as I was in so much pain (my sides and my chest are just aching so much, it's agony). Had a chest x-ray and some blood tests done. So yeah, diagnosis is pneumonia. I'm really bummed because I've already missed over two weeks of work. Scared I'm gonna lose my job, which would mean I can't get my amazon =[

So sorry. Pneumonia leaves you feeling weak for quite a while. Pherhaps the breeder of the Amazon would hold your bird for a while if he is coming from a breeder. Need to take care of yourself first.

Just to ease your mind, under the FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) your employer has to hold your job for 90 days if you or a family member becomes ill and you have to be off work. Just be sure to have your doctor notes and you should be fine. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Not sure the FMLA will do her much good in Oz ;)

Thanks for the kind words guys. I'm definitely taking it easy. Going mad because I've watched every DVD in the house a thousand times I think!
I really hope you're right about the breeder holding my baby for me!

In Australia there are unfair dismissal laws that state I can't be fired for being sick, especially when I have medical certificates, but people still get away with stuff like that all the time. It's just too much hassle to fight when something like that happens, so the victims just deal with it, so bosses keep doing it. I'm hoping my boss isn't like that though.

Get well soon, what a horrible thing to catch :(

I hope your employer is the sensible, fair, loyal type too. I can't stand hearing of unfair dismissals through illness. I know what you mean though, I was a retail manager before we bought our shop and head office were ALWAYS pushing for loopholes to sack people on long term sick. I prevented it as many times as I could.

Get yourself well, that's the number one priority. Everything else has a solution.

Mmh it's pretty cruddy. I semi lost my old job from being sick. My manager basically said (and this is working at a restaurant as a waitress!!) "you're not sick enough, I have someone here with a fever who came to work" - because that's what you want, a sick person serving you dinner! And so he cut back my shifts to one a week, so I just quit. I wasn't gonna be treated like that.
I'm gonna call my current boss tomorrow to talk about what's going on. Hopefully he'll be understanding. He has all the documentation proving I am sick at least.

Alli I am so sorry to hear that you quit, BUT I don't blame you one bit, I would have done exactly the same.
I would take this further, you "have a leg to stand on" manner of speech, you have the documentation, backing you up that you were sick, and could not attend work.
You have made me think twice now, how many times are we served without knowing that the waiter/waitress was ill !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If your current boss is not "understanding" and will not stand by you, please take this matter further. There must be some kind of a "Union" to report the issue to?

I suppose there is a union I can go to, and my uncle is a magistrate XD
The only thing is, I don't want to have to fight to keep the job - I mean I'd feel uncomfortable if I had to challenge my boss through the legal system in order to keep my job. It'd be too awkward to stay there after that. Although I don't really know if that's what the union does... We'll see how I go.

Yipe that is the correct route to take. It's tough, I admit that, but you must go ahead with it. How many more times are they going to get away with it.
Don't let them keep doing this to other people as well.
It will be awkward to go back, but you have your rights.
Chat to your uncle (the magistrate) ask for his advise, and take it from there.
Thanks for keeping us posted, please stay positive......;)

Mmh, I'm hoping it won't come to that, Ant. Hoping against hope that my boss is just going to say "don't worry, you're being silly, of course you still have a job"

Thanks, Von, I've got my everything crossed too =]
