Hey guys,

are toilet paper and/or hand towel cartboard rolls (so what you have left when you use up all the paper) safe to make tunnels for parrots? I thought of hanging only one roll horizontally for my lovebirds to hide in and swing in, so I wanted to check if they're safe to use.

Thanks!

Most of the concerns comes from them chewing them.

We do not use toilet paper rolls for our Amazon, but do use paper towel rolls. Something to do with the glue used on the toilet paper rolls.

Regarding using them for tunnels, our Amazon refuses to even try. :D

As long as you have a clear conscience that they are clean then yes.

There are some words of advice over here relating to putting the toilet seat lid down before flushing as this apparently stops 'nasty' spray from circulating the bathroom and everything in it. Which if true is pretty yuk! Has made me stop and think though.

SailBoat, well if they chew them out and spit (if I use the ones with no glue) then they are okay, right?

In that case definitely gonna avoid those XD Just the hand towels from the kitchen! Will try to make something for them :D

One thing similar I like using as well is left over wrapping paper rolls. After the holidays, I have several of them, so I cut them down to the size I want and save them to use throughout the year. Wrapping paper tends to not be glued to the roll, so there isn't the glue to worry about, and I have bigger birds so it works even better than wrapping paper rolls can sometimes be quite a bit thicker than paper towel rolls.

Nice, I completely forgot about those!

Lincoln loves paper rolls. I'll usually stuff some goodies into them and fold the ends

That's actually a very, very good idea. Stuff treats and foot toys in them, fold up the end, and throw it on top of the cage... My CAG would love that.

Toilet paper rolls are made from recycled paper products. I read that paper towel rolls are safe to give birds.

Salty loves to chew on paper towel rolls. There is one weaved into his playing chain right now.

Took the hand towel roll and cut it in half, so each parrot now has a small tunnel hanging from the top of the cage. Each has it on an approachable place. Max was always braver so he is slowly investigating it now, but Pika... I don't think she'll even go and touch it xD
Will take photos of it tomorrow (if Max doesn't destroy it soon), probably post it in a different thread that is specific for made toys :)
