How are they as a family companion? What if you were to adopt an adult?

Thanks in advance.

I'm looking into Ekkie's and there's one greater Jardine, around 15 years old, that needs a home.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
About the same as a Sennie... perhaps a little less attitude than a Sennie.

How to describe a sennie... good at tricks, not good at talking, plenty of attitude, very little fear. Mine is also very beaky, but not in an aggressive way.

Are Greater Jardines "one person" birds, or will they be good in a family with children?

Bump!!

Also, is there a reason why they don't seem very popular? They're hard to find in my area, and you don't see them very often for sale/adoption.

Jardines have great temperaments. I took in a 1+ year old from my cousin, didn't know me from a hole in the ground, and now that we are getting to know each other she is quite the comic with personality to boot!
training is coming along nicely.

a little less attitude than a senegal, but ohhhh so much funnier.

they are awesome at keeping themselves entertained while in their cages for hours & hours on end.(not that I would encourage that)

If you got the Jardine, the eating habits are fairly simple, and they are quiet...except for their calls, ha ha.

Senegals are mostly a one owner bird, Jardines tolerate other people, and are more accepting.

I've seen them, know of them but don't know them personally very well. There's not a lot of them around in the pet trade, I guess they're just not that popular as people tend to go for brighter colored birds. I barely ever see them in the pet trade....

The one I saw was very bright colored and quite beautiful. I don't get why they're not more popular. ?????

Thanks.

Not sure....there's beginning to be a lot of birds that are no longer being bred much anymore and you see less and less of them.

Well, I met a Greater Jardine at a rescue. He was 15 years old I think, and he could say his name, and make sneezing, coughing sounds, and "raspberries" like with your tongue. He stood up for every one in my family's hand, but he felt most comfortable with me, so that's why I'm ambivalent. Very very beautiful and cute bird. He nipped me a few times when I pet him in the "wrong" place, but he liked head scratches. She said he was generally quiet as well.

He was beautiful, and I loved his color, and his wings. Therefore, I don't get why they're not more popular, especially if what everyone is telling me is true about their personalities.

I'm highly considering him as a family companion bird, but since it's a huge commitment, I'm not sure. He was also very very healthy looking. The rescue I went to takes impeccable care of their birds, and its super clean.

They also showed me a very cute Goffin cockatoo, but he was a screamer. Supposedly he had been returned back to the rescue a few times. My husband adored him (he has a soft spot for cockatoos). That bird had so much personality, but the screaming was off the charts, even for a Goffin. Poor little guy, if only he was a bit quieter, he would be adopted in two seconds. Sweetest happiest little bird you ever saw, and loved all people.

I have owned a Senegal, and am now the proud NEW owner of a Jardine's. I had to re home my little Sennie when my second daughter was born...because he was SO jealous and always tried to attack her...call incessantly...and scream that newborn panic cry to attempt to get me running!! My timing was off.😢

Now we have just adopted a Jardine's who is 4 years old. She likes EVERYONE...loves to greet strangers at the door and sit with them and share thier food and cuddle with them...
She likes all my kids, but LOVES my second daughter (ironic) who is now 9. She will call her, and puff, and dance, and talk every time she sees her!!

I don't know a lot of parrots... But my Senegal ALWAYS had to be told NO, and our Jardine is much more friendly and independent at the same time...wierd mix...but she loves to play alone and is very content to do so!! Unlike my Senegal, who was Velcro!! Lol

A velcro poi of any type is pretty uncommon. In general they are all happy being out with everyone and playing on their own.
