Penelope: 12 year old Quaker Parakeet rescue//
Günter: 3 month old Peachfaced Lovebird
I'm starting to think that Penelope needs a friend. I am away for 12 hours a day, four days a week and she only gets maybe two hours of interaction with me tops (the other three days, she pretty much gets run of the house for 6-7 hours minimum). Now, I know birds are flock animals, and for a good portion of her week, Penelope has no flock to chatter to. Whenever I'm in the room, she makes all sorts of little grumbles and gurgles (as well as her squawks and screams) to make sure I'm there and paying attention to her, but part of me wonders what happens when I'm gone. Her cage is very big, especially compared to what she's been kept in in the past, and she has a lot of toys, but she doesn't have another living being to "talk" to.
Now, I'm doing more research before picking out another Fid (barring one picking me like Penelope), because I'd rather not have another difficult, sweet, little green dictator, and I'd prefer something that didn't raise the noise level a lot (my duplex neighbors are saints and had a Military Macaw for years, but I'm sure they don't want to hear two birds screaming their heads off all day). So, here's what I am looking for in a second bird:
1) Approximately Quaker Parakeet sized. I don't want something that can maul Penelope, and I don't want something that she can maul) This rules out budgies, lovebirds, and parrotlets.
2) Not super loud. This rules out most conures.
My prospective second child would have its own cage, play area, and, if necessary, alone time with me. I'm looking into Cockatiels, but, as odd as it sounds, there don't seem to be many for sale in my area. There do seem to be quite a few Bourke's, mustache, ringneck, and Alexandrine parakeets showing up on craigslist and other places a few months ago, but none now, meaning there is probably a breeder, but I cannot seem to locate a website.
Basically, long post aside, what kinds of birds have other members mixed with Quakers and had good results? Are there any other species to recommend?
