Can you suggest the right bird for me…?

Hello,

I used to have a lorikeet when I was little who I loved a lot; he was playful, cuddly and loved attention. I really miss him… I really want to get another bird now but am struggling to think of a type I want. There are so many different types and they are all so beautiful or have such cute personalties – I was hoping I could get some input on what you think would be best based on my situation.

I live in a house, not an apartment and I work for roughly 5 hours a day, 4 days a week. I also earn enough money to pay for expensive food, vet bills and toys. I’m really looking for a bird that will be playful and affectionate like my lorikeet - who will enjoy being out with me and doing most daily activities with me. I’m not really interested in birds like cockatiels, budgies and lovebirds…

Noise is not a HUGE concern, I can handle a few morning screeches and happy/play time screeches but I can’t have a bird that wont be happy to entertain its self with toys while I’m at work and just spends all day screaming instead… this is why I hope the amount of toys I can afford to supply will help with this.

I don’t care if a bird can’t talk or sing, I just want something that is going to make a great pet…

I would love something a bit bigger, to be honest, I would LOVE a cockatoo… I have played with baby ones before and they are just so adorable and cuddly, but the noise level scares me off, not because it would annoy me personally but I worry if it got out of hand my neighbours would hear it and complain even though they are far away… I live in Australia too, so you can imagine how many people get them and end up leaving them in small cages, getting rid of them or just setting them free in the wild because of the screaming. If anyone has one, how often does your scream? Are umbrella cockatoos quieter in any way? Is their scream more ear piecing/louder then a sun conures?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm not sure which is quieter, but cockatoos(especially Umbrella) are very very cuddly. The only thing with that is if you cuddle them too much, they may get spoiled and not want to play on their own. They're known for being loud (most too's are) and they're known feather pluckers.

I know... the cuddly factor just makes me want one so badly! They are so cute... I remember playing with some sulphur crested babies and they were just adorable, so cuddly and cheeky, I love how cockatoos will "dance" with you, too. I'm just worried about the noise.

The Pionus is a cuddly sweet parrot. Loves being with you and still contend to play alone.

Green cheeks are very cuddly and playful. River is happy playing out with me, but also happy to entertain himself with his toys in his cage. Not terribly loud in comparison to some birds. Not a cockatoo, but in my opinion should be on the list of possiblities. ;)
(possibly a bit biased lol)

Hmm, I like green cheeks, especially cinnamon ones, they are really cute.

But they're so little... I really wanted something bigger, atleast lorikeet size or more...

I've had both. My sun conure passed away but I remember the screeches :) They are cuddly and high energy. I would love to have one but my heart wouldn't allow it. They are fun and so eager to play and learn.

U2's are cuddly and such a joy. You would need to be careful on your cuddle time. It can make them very needy and you wouldn't want that. It can quickly turn them into screamers and or pluckers and once the habbit starts its very hard to undo. Also the cuddly cuteness can be dangerous once the U2 sexualy matures.
As long as you love them while allowing them to remain confident and independent, you will have a fun loving bundle of fluff.

Sprite the cinnamon green cheek conure.
I would get a green cheek conure :) They are awesome. They are cuddly, playful, not too loud and they are happy to play by themselves.
