Just try to chatter and sing to him. If he seems to be fine with you then I don't think there's any problem with handling him.

I handled Merlin in the store, I was the one who boxed him up and then I had him straight out when I got him home. :D

Just give him time, if he seems calm and at ease with you then feel free! :)

Oh how exciting ! My opinion would be to let him make the first move.
I wouldn't want to rush him at all. Take things very slow and calm ( but your heart will be beating with excitement ) lolol. Give him time to unwind , stretch and nap.
Expect him to be wary of his new surroundings and you for that matter.
I wouldn't overwhelm him with a lot of toys and things in his cage just yet.
Maybe cover part of the cage to give him a feeling of security.
You probably know all this anyway. I know when I brought Yoshi home , and put my hand up to the edge of the carrier , it took him a minute or two to decide to step up and ey me take him out. My heart was beating so fast I could hardly take a breath , lolol.
But he was fine. I put him in his cage and he just stood on the perch frozen for a hour or so , but he then seemed to relax when I spoke to him , so I sat with him and kept talking softly to him . By then he felt at ease and started to climb around a little.
I think he accepted me as his protector that day, so I can say we did things right , for us anyway :)
Just take things slow , and don't forget to breath ! It helps :)

My daughter ""Parrotmomma" needs to post about getting her Tag.
She was worried to and the first week a little more worried. Things are working out well.....maybe she will read this and post her 2 cents. We live in Texas and her bird came from Maryland I believe.

thank you all so much! i think i will offer my hand to step up, but i wont push him. i plan to talk to him in his cage, and give him sme treats, and maybe a bird safe blanket at the bottom of the cage for security. any ideas about handling during the first week, as far as socializing and playing ect. like what was your first week with your bird like, are they louder when they adjust? also, if he bites me the first day( i know i will get bit eventualy and im OK with that) will that damage our relationsip? thank you so much!

Hi Ann,
Congratulations on your new fid :D How fun and exciting for you!

I got my TAG about 7 weeks ago and was worried about not getting meet him first . He was in Maryland and me in Texas..... I kept thinking How awful it would be to get my dream bird and it not like me :52:

Turns out I was worried for nothing, He has adjusted wonderfully . The first week or so was a little bumpy because we had to get to know each other . I just went slow with him , talking and singing to him. He would step up for me and loved his head scratched , but other than that he really did not want to be touched much and he was pretty sqauky ...lol . After about a week he really started warming up to me and now he loves to sit in my lap every night before bedtime and first thing in the mornings he likes his snuggle time too. His personality is really coming out now and I feel like we are really starting to bond.

He's becoming quite a tag-a-long and loves to be right in the middle of what I'm doing....lol

hes adorable! he just glows, you are very lucky to have him :). i originally wanted a clipped bird, but the patties i have met have been excellent fliers so im thinking about keeping him flighted. i have 4 cats and a dog, the dog is a dachshund but is really gentle. i know they are unpredictable, but her general personality is pretty gentle, she'll take allot before snapping, and even then she never bites, plus she will be 10 yrs old in 4 months (happy birthday!). the four cats have a high prey drive, i figured if they were flighted, they could fly down to the floor but save themselves by flying away. however if they were clipped it would be harder to escape the cats but they wouldn't fly into danger that often. any suggestions?

My green cheek was flighted for quite awhile , but when my moms bird flew out the door , I realized just how fast and easy they can get away. she got him back thankfully , but it was a nerve racking ordeal trying to get him to come down out of a tree . I came home and clipped mine to where she can fly about 10 feet with no lift . my Timneh can fly about 15 feet with no lift as well . Our cats stay outside and my dogs stay inside but they have no interest in the birds so being on the floor is not an issue . but my kitchen and living room area is kinda all open so I worry that if they can fly to well they could get hurt flying to the stove and get burned. So for me clipped wings work best.

Thanks for the advice, I think I will start him out clipped and maybe let them grow out and if I don't think it's working I will just clip them again. I can't wait to get him! Il pot updates as soon as they come!

I would let the bird set the pace, it's what I did with JJ. I let her decide when she wanted to be friends, didn't take her long though. I would give your baby the first day to just sort of adjust to sounds and sights though, JJ was stepping up fairly well and good to go basically the second day we got her.
