Fargo- Blue and Gold Macaw
Hello,

So, i need advice for Fargos sleeping arrangement for a night! There are cute pictures for those who read it all LOL :p

My best friend since i was 8 years old is having her 18th birthday next weekend, and she desperately wants me to come, i actually havnt seen her in a year because i dont go anywhere :p

I am a very unsocial person, i actually havnt left the house/property since the beginning of January haha :O I am very happy just being with Fargo and my horse

anyways!

This is a one time thing, i HATE parties, and i told her i would think about it, but she knows im obsessed with Fargo so if i cant think of what i can do with him for his sleeptime, then i wont go!
So please dont give me lectures saying this is why a young person shouldnt own a macaw ;)

This is Fargos sleep schedule EVERY night..

At 6pm he will go to sleep on my arm, at 6:30pm, he goes to his boing stretched across my room, which is what i call his sleeping perch..
I can make him go to his sleeping perch a bit earlier though if i close up the windows so my room is dark..

He will not move a single muscle, until i want to put him away, however this is usually late at night, i sit on my computer with the headphones in, and a blanket over it so fargo is in complete darkness and silence

I have fallen asleep one time, and woke up at 4am, and he was in the exact same spot..

When i put him away, he goes straight to sleep.. however!

When we were flooded in with no electricity, i would go to sleep at about 8pm, so he would go to his sleeping perch, then soon after i would put him away..
He isnt in a 'deep' sleep, so he jumps around his cage unhappily for 5 or 10 minutes, and then goes to sleep!

Now, the party starts at 6 i think, but she said its fine if i came later..

i just need thoughts on what i could do with Fargo for that night, i wouldnt stay overnight, just a few hours!

My thoughts, is i could make him go to sleep at 6pm, then he would be asleep for 30 minutes, and i could put him in his cage, he might be unhappy for a little bit though? :31:

I am going to spend every 5 minutes messaging my brother telling him to check on Fargo haha :p

So do you think this would work? i would just have a grumpy macaw until he falls asleep?

Wow, this was long! Thanks for reading, and because you read such a novel, here are some photos Fargo underneath the blanket- lying upside down- getting cuddles, just like a baby hahhahaha

Hi Tab!

Fargo is flighted, right? Maybe before you go, you can do some recall training, and play hard with him. And get Fargo really tired. That's what I do for Ozzie if I'm going out somewhere at night. It usually works very good.

And the photos is so adorable! ;)

Your plan wiill work brilliantly and tiring him out a little extra is a good plan too. He will just wake up earlier to get in bed with you and get extra cuddles LOL

I think a little change in his routine once in a while won't hurt. I can totally relate and sympathize with you though! I go overboard by letting my whole schedule run around Boomer. I can't even go to my figure drawing classes because I feel guilty putting him to bed an hour and a half early.

I think Fargo will be fine seriously! PS. Fargo looks cute!

I would wake him up extra early, tire him out later in the day after he takes a afternoon nap, and start his routine earlier.

I hate to not be home to put Rosie to bed, but on the rare occasion when I know I won't be home until late I keep my night stand light off so she can go to sleep with the sun.

Sounds like either of your ideas would work - putting him to bed a little earlier, or heading off to the party a half hour later. I agree with BoomBoom - a slight change in his schedule should be fine. BTW, the photos are adorable! (Pritti has the most crazy sleeping non-schedule.)

You got some AWESOME ideas here, Tab. :) Fargo will forgive you, NO doubt in my mind. Go to the party and TRY and have a good time. :D ....and leave your phone at home. Ok, now I'm probably asking too much, right?

Sam will have your head if you text him every 5 minutes.

Thank you so much guys!!
So.. wake up early, play lots, lots of flight training, and he will be so tired he will fall asleep straight away! hehe :09:

Yes, its hard because Fargo basically chooses his own sleep schedule, he goes to sleep with the sun, and wakes up with the sun, although he never makes a single noise in the mornings!

HAHAHA Wendy, i dont think i can promise you all that :09:

I even said to my bestie, do i talk to people about Fargo and say that im a crazy bird lady? :22: and she said you might want to leave the second part out :09:

I have a feeling im just going to show pictures of Fargo to anyone who talks to me LOL ;)

I don't think putting him to bed a half hour early or perhaps even recruiting a family member to "babysit" for the evening and put him to bed at his regular time would bother him. I know they require more attention than the average pet, but just because you have a parrot doesn't mean you can't have a social life! My husband and I go out sometimes, and we just use common sense on what time we expect to be home on whether Kiwi gets to stay up late or goes to bed early.

One more thing, while I commend you for being a very responsible owner and really dedicating yourself to Fargo, I think you may be getting him used to more attention than you will reasonably be able to consistently provide him with over the next 60+ years you will be together. What happens when you start attending college, need to get a job outside the home or get married and have kids? Will you really be able to spend every waking minute with him for the rest of your life? You really need to start teaching him how to entertain himself and be ok to be alone for a few hours so he doesn't develop behavioral problems if the amount of attention he's used to now has to change. If you feel your bird will have issues with a half hour away from you, that's a major behavioral issue waiting to happen, and needs to be corrected now. Best of luck.

Firstly, I already attend college and have for the past year, so that hasnt changed at all? and before that i was homeschooling..

I really dont like children, never have..

I have never in my whole life had a social life, before i even got Fargo.. so no need to blame fargo for me not having a social life..

Thats my choice, not because i dont like leaving Fargo.. Even when i was younger my friends used to invite me places and i said no..

Just because the average teenager enjoys socializing doesnt mean they all do..

I find absolutely no enjoyment getting drunk and partying..

Fargo is in his cage for 2 hours a day when i do chores with my horses.. and i have left for a full day from 6am till 6pm when i went on a trip to seaworld in january.. Before that i would visit my horse each weekend for the full day and he was very happy in his cage all day..

He never ever has a problem with this

He has no problem being in his cage, the breeders said he was a very independent bird, which i believe is true..

My question was about a sleeping arrangement, because THAT has never changed..

Although Fargo is a very cuddly bird, he spends alot of his day playing by himself, he is not a clingy bird..

He never ever screams for attention..

So after 6 months he has NO behavioral issues what so ever, and in my opinion is a very well trained bird..

but thank you for your concern :)

I wasn't trying to be offensive or anything, just wanted to point out that life can change unexpectedly and Fargo needs to be prepared. So long as your giving him time each day to play independently and learn to be fine entertaining himself, it is something all parrots need to learn. My husband and I are terribly social either, and we typically dont go out much. We spend A LOT more time with Kiwi than most people do with their birds, but we still make sure he's ok on his own if we want to go out to dinner or see a movie. And I have to laugh a little about the "I don't like kids" one. My own parents didn't like or want kids, so they got their parrots instead. I was an accident 17 years into marriage, and it was tough on them and their 3 totally unprepared-for-change birds to adapt to a major life change.

There is absolutely ZERO doubt in my mind, Tab, that no matter HOW old you are, or WHAT curveballs life "may" throw in your way, you and Fargo will be PERFECT together. The bond you and Fargo share is what many people can only dream about. :)

THIS love story DOES have a happily ever after. :D

I am a lot older than you with a much smaller bird, but I totally understand how you are feeling. I posted a similar question last month when we were all going out in the early evening and wouldn't be back until after Basil's bedtime. I would much rather be home with my family and my birdie than out socializing (I never wanted kids either but that's another story). I left the tv on for Basil to watch the hockey game we were attending (and told him to look for us). And he was fine. You have a good birdie heart to be so considerate about your Fargo.

Tab, I kind of envy you! I'm away from my birds for far longer each day than I wish to be, and I'd rather just be home with them! I'm not a social person, but I do enjoy getting out of the house and exploring, occasionally even taking a pet or two with me. Also not interested in kids! :D

It sounds like it would probably bother you more about not being there to put Fargo to sleep 'correctly' (how he's accustomed to going to bed) rather than him being bothered about going to bed differently one night.

I think you should go out and enjoy yourself, even though you typically don't enjoy doing just that! A friend asked you, and she'd love to have you there! Then the next day, you can snuggle up and love on Fargo as much as you please cause you missed him!

I have everything planned and ready for the day, what time i have to have a shower, what time i have to clean Fargos cage, what time i have to get ready :p

Will do lots of flight training this afternoon so he is nice and tired ;)

Will make him go to sleep at 6, and then wait for a little while i finished getting ready so i can hear if he settles down !

I was asking Fargo an opinion on what to wear.. apparently he didnt like my dress :p

Wish us luck guys! :D

You'll be fine Tab, The trick is getting Fargo tired so even if he notices everything happening a bit early he will be too tired to protest much. Have a great time.

Geez tab by your picture you look very beautiful and I can't believe you don't have a social life and have chosen not to. Although though out my teen life I have chosen not to very much as well it just ends up in to much trouble were these birds don't so I understand what you mean. I feel guilty every time I leave my birds at home because of my own social wants and it's to there fault I chose what's have done and love it every day.

Although I'm sure fargo will be just fine an have a good time because you deserve it.

Oh it was terrible!!

Fargo went to his sleeping perch at 5:45pm, and I put him in his cage at 6, and he was perfect!!! :)

I got to the party at 7, and I sat there, bored out of my mind, didn't talk to anyone really, I have NO idea why people enjoy parties haha And the music was terrible ;)

so 2 hours later I ended up in the house talking to the older people (her mum and siblings) about Fargo hahahahaha

They thought he was beautiful and clever :p

so left at 9, got home at 10, went to the cage and he said hello, and I gave him a big hug, and he went back to sleep!

and he didn't hold any grudges ;) hehe

I knew he would be fine with you going out for a bit (even if you didn't have a super time LoL!). You're a wonderful mommy to Fargo, Tab :)
