Am I doing this right?

So Partrick has been with us for about 6-7 weeks now. He's more comfortable with us and takes food from our hand. I'm trying to push things forward so we're interacting with him more. Because he's not remotely tame (and pretty skittish) he spends all his time in the cage. I know he needs time out of he cage and needs to get accustomed to being handled and stuff.
So I'm trying to consider what we should do to help he process along.

I'm thinking about letting him out (opening the door and leaving him to come out). He'll start off flying around erratically and being a bit scared but then will come to rest somewhere then might become more comfortable. I will have to allow him all day to adjust so we're not chasing him about or anything trying to get him in the cage. Should I let him out of the cage in this state and allow him to get used to being outside of the cage?

Or instead should I try and get him handelable first and bring him out?

Any thoughts are welcome

It sure would help if we knew what kind of bird we were talking about, what Patrick's age is. Did you get him from a pet shop or breeder? In the 6-7 weeks you have had Patrick, have you done any training with him?

It's really hard to offer any suggestions without this information.....

Yeah more information would probably help.
Patrick is a 7-8month old Senegal I got from a breeder. He wasn't hand reared at all, I think he was kept in an aviary prior to me getting him.

I've been feeding him by hand for about 3-4 weeks. this basically entails me getting some seeds or fruit and offering it to him, he scoots over on the perch and takes it and I click a clicker.

I haven't really got any idea how to progress as he's so scared of everything he just flies around the cage (or escapes and flies around the house frantically).
I don't know how to do any further training he's fairly non responsive to everything I've tried.
I haven't touched him either (except when I had to grab him) as he backs away and I'm expecting a bite.
