When will my Quaker start learning to talk??

I bought a Quaker a few days ago, and I was told he was 2 years old, but now I'm told he's less than a year old. Whichever the case, mine is very tame and friendly. He'll fly to anyone's shoulders, he's used to being indoors (he won't even fly toward the windows), he loves being petted and scratched and he won't mind if I hold him, ALTHOUGH he's become frightened of my hands thinking that I'll force him inside his cage every time - he used to step-up without hesitation but now he won't do it at all.

How long will it take for him to get used to his new home and start becoming comfortable around my hands again?? (I often hand-feed him treats like cooked rice, apple, oranges, carrots, bread, etc.)

How long will it take for him to sort of understand what I'm saying to him, and mimic me? (From his previous home, he knows how to laugh - like "ahahahahahahaha" while bobbing his head -, he says "peekaboo", sometimes he mimics the sound around him like a car alarm or a whining dog, he often makes this water dropping sound like from a cell phone notification, and he sometimes whistles along with me.)

Based on what I've told you about him, do you think he can be potty trained?

It's really hard to predict how long it may take for any parrot to completely settle into a new home. It sounds like you're off to a good start though. Just be patient and take everything at the pace your QP sets.

Keep talking to your parrot a lot-- you can read to him and even sing to him too. The more human speech that a parrot hears the more likely that parrot is to try to repeat some words. Using words in context helps when teaching a parrot to imitate speech. Identify foods and other objects your QP comes into contact with. While my QP Ralph doesn't talk a lot, he does understand lots of words because I've used them repeatedly in context.

I'm not an expert on potty training, so I'll leave that for someone else to discuss.

Pisco, CNYGUY is right on with his post.....if your bird had not been previously owned, it could have taken several months for it to get acclimated to you & its new surroundings...even now, once it feels comfortable, it could develop an attitude and surprise you, so you might want to read up on the training of your new friend...here's a few links from the forum's archives:

If that's not enough reading for you, the internet is rife with additional information as well.

Good luck with your reading, your training of your new friend and your training.....
