Whiteboards and blackboards

I'm starting a project that requires the use of reusable writing surfaces. Nico (2 year old GCC) and I live in a studio apartment at the moment, and I'm super worried about the dangers that might arise if I use white boards or black/chalk boards.
I'm pretty sure Expo markers have fumes that are bad for him, and the only other option I can think of is using chalk boards, which creates dust (also not good for him). We have a small air purifier in our room, but I'm guessing there's only so much safety that can offer. Obviously I would never let Nico be in contact with the boards, writing utensils or any residue I can possibly find.
Which option would be safer? Are there any other alternative options for reusable writing surfaces? (Of course, if both of these options are super unsafe for Nico I will just end up using lots of paper and fume-free markers, but I would like to be nicer to the environment if I can.)

do you have to be able to write on it, or could you arrange letters on a magnet board or something

At home, you need to use a whiteboard -or- blackboard?

Use you laptop hooked-up to your big screen TV. Only requires a cable and a couple of set adjustments and you're running.

I think they do make non-toxic whiteboard markers.

I'd tend to think a chalkboard is the way to go. Grantedyou dont want the Dust floating around but the chalk itself is relatively non-toxic, and as noodles mentioned if you clean the board with a damp cloth that will help cut back on the dust. Keeping it not-near, and running an air filter should help wiht the remailning particles, I would tend to think.
