Hello everyone.

You may or may not remember that I had to take Abba to the Vet cause I saw a tiny drop of blood in her droppings.

I am embarrassed because of the visit itself and because I never gave you all an update.

I did take her to a CAV.

He stuck a cotton swab up her cloaca and said that Amazons of a certain age are prone to polyps and if so I would have to bring her to a Vet in NYC for treatment.

Abbas gram stain came back negative.
but he did give me antibiotics but i have not used them because why would I give her antibiotics if the gram stain was neg?

He charged $500.

He said that each bird should have a check up twice a year.

I know I cant afford that and that is why I feel like a dope.

Nope, you're not a dope, you're a hero.
Unless you had a lot of bloodwork and stuff, that IS a lot.
We need to find you a more reasonable vet, I think...

Thank you guys, I was really torn up.
I even stopped checking the forums for weeks.

But, yes she is healthy and happy at 35 years young.

Consider Hunting around for other Avian Vets in your general area!

A single, emergency visit, with no history at that Clinic, yup, you paid a premium.

Let's face it, you have more than enough Parrots that even with great luck, you will, at some point, be rushing to get emergency Avian care. You need to search out a CAV Clinic that you can both afford and develop a working relationship.

Do you live near NYC? I have a great Avian vet in Wantagh. His name is Robert Monaco and I don't pay near that for a whole complement of blood work and a check up.

my vets charge like 60 for a checkup but that's without any blood tests. an xray brought it up to 90. Even when I took jojo to the university in Colorado to get her beak examined after it broke was only $75. $500 seems very excessive but maybe its because I've never had to do blood and poop testing?

Wow, isn't that weird. I guess driving from Jersey to LI would be too much. Hope you can find another vet in your area.
