Can you sprout a regular parrot seed mix? Is it safe to feed to your birds?

I wouldn't because they are usually fortified, and have other non-seed elements mixed in...pellets, cracked corn, treats, etc. those types of things ruin a batch completely. It's best to use just the seeds you want to sprout. You can also buy sprouting seed mixes for birds commercially. Higgins makes one, and I'm sure there are others. I usually just go to the health food store and get alfalfa, broccoli, radish, red clover, and spelt/wheat berries. Chia seeds and flax cannot be jar sprouted.

well, if you are sure your seed is not fortified, its safe.

actually, ive been recommended on other forums, plus from a friend who was a vet tech, that sprouting seeds is a great way to check for the quality of the seed you are feeding. if 80% of it sprouts or more, it's a good mix.

i always test sprout any new batches i get from the store. if they dont sprout, i toss it and get a new batch.
