Re: Wuhan virus

My neighbors who I took care of their dogs, got sick with flu on their cruise. They were in the southern tropics. I've stayed away! One if them now has symptoms of pneumonia, I urged them to go to the doc and get tested. But nope they don't want to bother. The one who is still sick says it's probably allergies in top of flu....
So you get a LOT of people like that.

Sailboat is right everything is not up to date, reporting wise.

And it's just a good idea to be prepared for any kind of emergency.

Hopefully this won't be a serious flu for north America. But there is always a risk that one day there will be, and we are all do globally linked now.

Re: Wuhan virus

It would take a very cynical person to suggest that the Chinese government wouldn’t want the full scale of any kind of domestic crisis fully known in the outside world lest it cause damage to their fragile economy - a VERY cynical person indeed!! (Oh I am SO gonna end up in one of their re-education camps with this sort of attitude!)

Re: Wuhan virus

It does take any country awhile to realize there is a problem. And not all countries have the infrastructure to deal with health crisis.

Remember our Russian comrade who recently said people die like roaches in his area as there are few and far between doctors?

But yeah money, and different government styles supress info!

I can even jump in the deep end, abd say what are the odds of this " new " virus appears right at the peek of travel from that area?? Hmmm
"Ma Xiaowei declined to estimate how long it would take to bring the situation under control, but said travel restrictions and other strict measures should bring results “at the lowest cost and fastest speed.”

Re: Wuhan virus

Oh hey, we've a few cases in our tiny little island country - the second one visited my work neighbourhood and latest one lived right in my home neighbourhood too :p So she would have visited all the places I regularly visit - the eateries, the grocery stores, etc.

All masks (surgical and N95) are sold out islandwide. That being said, most people don't know how to wear them properly, so they're not effective.

But being Singapore, we're already familiar with SARS and MERS, so the government is taking slow precautions.

My mum just reached out to me about it, and I've been selective on what I share. I don't want to scare her or my dad - not good with their heart conditions.

But it is CNY. People save up money just to go home to visit all their relatives, just like us Americans do for Thanksgiving. For many, it's the last time they might get to say goodbye before an elderly loved one passes away, so it's going to be difficult to stop people. I must say I'm incredibly empathetic - my mother was not able to see her father before he passed away (she had left 4 years prior), my mother was mid-flight when her brother passed away, and my mother said her goodbye to her mother a year before she passed away.

Ahh thanks for pointing out the significance of this holiday to family. You helped me understand better. It would be very upsetting to me to be kept from faimly during thanksgivings. I hope all those families get a chance to make up that faimly time. And I hope you and your are safe.

What is the take on the outbreak in your news?

Tips on mask wearing. A big problem is the tendency to touch and readjust the mask with your hands. That's going to put you at risk as your hands come near your eyes, and contamination of the mask. As posted earlier eyes are mucus membranes and are a place virus can enter your body. So eye protection is a good idea. Also as you breath your mask can become wet with your breath, making it possible for the viruses to pass through the mask. If the mask isn't rated for small virus particle it's us less effective. It still provides some protect from coughs and sneezing. So keep hands away from face. And if you are out around people coughing and sneezing taking a shower and washing your hair after being out is a good idea, as hair can easily trap virus particle.

Re: Wuhan virus

At this point, in Singapore, we've 7 cases confirmed so far (do expect that to increase); however, they've been folks who recently been to Hubei in the past 14 days.

So the government just issued a notice today. They are contacting all those who have been to Hubei in the past 14 days to be quarantined at home (if they're citizens, permanent residents, or long term pass holders) or quarantined in a government facility (if they're tourists).

They've taken it a step further as well. If you've a passport issued from Hubei, regardless of your recent travel, you also will be quarantined. As for incoming flights, from tomorrow onwards (it's evening right now), if you've been to Hubei in the past 14 days or if your passport was issued from Hubei, you can no longer enter Singapore. Short-term visas issued to people with passports issued from Hubei have all been suspended.

I do work in a very tourist-popular area and commute via public transport, so there's really no choice for me. The government has not yet stopped schools, which they did do during SARS. We'll see how it goes.

My only concern really is if Cairo will be affected - how zoonotic is it is the big question for me. So I'm thinking of just keeping the house F10ed.

I answered this in this thread. I think the quick answer is yes, but birds don't get sick. They become passive carriers. Many influenza viruses evolved with birds as hosts. http://www.parrotforums.com/budgies-parakeets/83889-can-parakeets-catch-human-influenza.html

For a lifetime or just temporarily?

Re: Wuhan virus

Noodles, I don't thi k there is enough data. We know people have been living with parrots for a long time, and presumably have had flu, with no horror stories....but has research been done on this, I dont know . I'll look
This is in ducks, but talks about birds in general I think. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/06/170630085734.htm
Ok yes, they can get influenza, especial influenza A

Influenza A viruses have infected many different animals, including ducks, chickens, pigs, whales, horses, and seals. However, certain subtypes of influenza A virus are specific to certain species, except for birds, which are hosts to all known subtypes of influenza A viruses. Currently circulating Influenza A subtypes in humans are H3N2 and H1N1 viruses. Examples of different influenza A virus subtypes that have infected animals to cause outbreaks include H1N1 and H3N2 virus infections of pigs, and H7N7 and H3N8 virus infections of horses.

"Keeping Your Bird Flu Free
Truth be told, many times the biggest risk to a pet bird's health is being around its owner. While sometimes even those birds who are cared for very well get sick, it's important to keep in mind that there are many different colds, viruses, and infections that birds can get from people." From this source. https://www.thesprucepets.com/avian-flu-in-pet-birds-390394
Reverse people making pets sick with flu virus. Notes that this can happen, more study needed. Be careful when you have flu around pets. Talks about dogs and cats. Flu virus is highly adaptive, and mutates.
https://today.oregonstate.edu/archi...-raises-concerns-about-human-pet-transmission

I think some complications factors are these. If your bird is only mildly sick, and they hide being sick, do you even know? If your bird is sick, is it taken to an avain vet specialist, are they even thinking about flu, do they hav the ability to test for flu's???

Surprised they altered Airplane for Australian distribution. You chose an awesome segment! I understand why Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me rankled the Commonwealth Nations. Did they modify that as well??

Oh dear, the "last bastion" double entendre was not intentional!!

If there confirmed a secondary infected by this virus, then we are done for even we don't have to live in China.
