Connie - Green Cheek Conure
Hi,
I live in London Ontario. I don't know how many other people live here too but I found the cutest "fancy" green cheek Conure at a pet store. I really want the right person to buy this bird.
The pet store is called Pet Paradise, on Adelaide N.

Anyways, (this was before I got Connie) I was looking at the birds and I noticed this one alone in a cage. I went over and the bird put his head up against the bars for me to scratch. I gave him scratches through the bars but he clearly wanted out. I asked if the guy could take the bird out. He opened the cage and the bird climbed right out on to the top of the cage. It stepped onto my finger eventually and sat with its bum in the palm of my hand. It was the cutest thing in the whole world. He was $500, so way to expensive for me. Apparently the guy has been working there for 2 years and the bird has been there the whole time. I don't know why no one wants this bird!!
Its been months and Im still thinking about it, wondering what type of person is going to adopt him and hoping its not someone who's going to keep him for a couple years and then decide they don't want him anymore.

So the bottom line is, there's this lovely conure in this store in London ON and despite everything he is worlds sweetest little bird. Im pretty sure it likes scratches and enjoys being around people. Im hoping that someone will give this little bird a happy ending to a pretty rough start.

Heres a picture of it that i found on their website!

Oh he is a cutie! There is not really such thing as a "fancy" green cheek, this one is a yellow sided mutation. It is sad that the store doesn't even know what kind of birds they have.

im pretty sure they just call mutations of certain species "fancy" in some pet shops. I know a lot of places have "fancy" gold fish and its just a marketing thing. Id like to believe that they know what kind of bird it is...
but it was really sad seeing this bird in this pet shop, thats why i want her to be bought by someone where its not just "spur of the moment"

I've only ever seen green cheeks referred to as "Fancy" in Petsmart here in Saskatoon, and I think it's because they couldn't care less about determining the actual species. In Petland they always identify the conure by its mutation (green cheek, dusky, black capped, etc.). I find this ironic because they list their snakes by their mutations, and yet not the birds, which require WAY more investment and work.

I don't know how many times I've walked in and heard the staff discuss how they own a "fancy" green cheek and refer to it that way. And then when I've mentioned it's a mutation (YSGCC, Cinnamon, Pineapple, Maroon bellied, etc.), they look at me like I'm crazy. Unfortunately many grand scale pet stores do not properly educate their staff or the public that choose to buy from them. I often feel the same way, too, that when there's a high maintenance bird (sun conures, African Greys, Eclectus) that they go to a good home. Unfortunately it's not always the case, and the staff are not always allowed to refuse sale.

I still remember when I was at the pet store buying Avery and I saw a man walking around with a cage that was too small for even a Budgie, walking around with a big bag of seed, saying how he's going to put their newly bought Sun Conure into it... or how my boyfriend had someone come into the store when he worked at Petland come in and complain how feeding her cockatiel cost her more than $25 a month...

All I can say is that education is key - for both the employer and the buyer. They should seriously require someone to undergo a basic contract agreement that includes some worksheets/info sheets on the amount of care required to welcome a bird into your home. Imagine how that would change who decided to get a bird and who didn't...

Conure, Cinnamon Green Cheek "Shasta"
That is one cute GCC..... His problem is he is too much $$$

And just maybe, The pet shop takes really good care of him.

When I purchased "Shasta" from PetCo, I was told that in the morning that the staff would have Shasta out of her cage and go for shoulder rides as the staff did there pre-opening work. She had been at PetCo for 6 months, So I asked if they would discount her.... I was told they could take $50 off her $400 price tag.... (she is a GCC fancy..... IE: Cinnamon) and the "regular" GCC are priced at $320

At least the petstores here don't sell anything bigger than a Conure, I remember one Congo African Gray, but that was the last medium+ parrot I saw for sale. I like that though. No one should buy a bird on impulse, especially a larger and needier bird like a CAG. >.>
Just today I saw a Jenday Conure listed for $600 at my local Petco. Obviously young, still has streaks of green on its head, I think hand-raised too. My Petsmarts list their GCC's as "fancy" too, but Petco lists them as the mutation, they recently had a Pineapple, but it sold recently, I hope it isn't returned or rehomed, I wonder if that is the same fate for the Jenday, or if someone will come along and love it forever. Perhaps its good they put such a high price tag, people are less inclined to buy the bird on an impulse, or for their begging child just because its "cheap". For some reason people seem to think small price-tag = small work. Large price tag "oooh, that bird must be a lot of work, maybe I shouldn't"

Haha, and that's only the initial cost! The long term care of a parrot means lots of $$$. I think if people knew that too they'd be waaaaaay less inclined as well to make that impulse buy, too. :p

Well, whatever his colour or breeding - I hope that bird gets a good and loving home. He is so beautiful...

I didn't know anything about birds when I saw JellyBean at Petmania (European equivalent of your chain pet stores) but the guys working at the store told me exactly what he was and I know they really wanted him to go to a good home. He must have charmed them something fierce! I just fell in love with him..

I can honestly say that I never knew the love or companionship that a bird can bring to your life... they are without comparison..

That is a beautiful sentiment, Jellybean...I agree! I love all animals, and have had many different pets all my life...but there is something different about birds! It's like having another person in your house. Once you have birds, you can't be without them!

So pretty. I'm at the point where I avoid seeing the birds in petstores. I cant stand leaving knowing the r there. I usually ask about them, and find out how lng the have been there.. And i feel an ache in my tummy. One store over the summer had 5 birds that had bern there from 1.5 to 2 yrs. the were asking far more than i ever saw for these fids. The all looked healthy and sermed comfortable. I dont get it.... Why would some rather charge sooo much and not sell the birds and pay staff and hopefully vets to provide care for years.

I have had the pleasure of hand raising two male pacific blue parrotlets, and two very special conures, I have one now, looking for a male to match!
He or she is a beauty, very nice colour placement. They charge $600 in Vancouver for 'fancy'. Shame.
