After several weeks deliberation I finally settled on a new/permanent cage for Syd today. I had looked online for ages but found it in the local pet shop that specialises in birds.
When I rescued him from his first home last May, his cage was tiny and I managed - before I knew any better - to get a secondhand one that was very adequate, in good condition but more for a medium parrot than Syd. I had to adapt it a bit realising that Syd was a typical GCC escape artist so it's been on my mind for a while.
I really wanted horizontal bars and everywhere I looked everything was vertical until today. It's big enough, but not humongous, a flight cage style with dome shaped opening roof, it's 1/2" spacing and a mix of horizontal and vertical bars. The stand has castors so I can still move the cage about with a shelf for his storage. A Rainforest Santa Fe. It was so good to be able to play with it in the shop before buying. So I'm a happy bunny.
He watched me put it together with the same amount of interest he showed when he watched the washing machine in action earlier and after he went to bed I steam cleaned it and set it up next to his old one. Tomorrow he can have the run of it with all the doors open to see if he likes it and there are some sneaky seeds in the bowl just to help him make up his mind.
I hope in a few days he will be happy to call it home. Fingers crossed!
