Hello and welcome!
I think the best way to decide on a new bird is to do lots of research into the different kinds to see who will fit into your life:) There is a wealth of information here on the forum. You can look through the different species sections which should help you a lot!

I have a Crimson bellied conure who is an absolute sweetheart, so I am quite partial to them for a smaller, playful bird:)

Good luck on your decision!

Huginn - Black Headed Caique (male, hatched March 2011)
I have a caique. He's playful, good with most strangers, and loves snuggling up with my husband and me. On a normal day he spends most of his time running around on the couch, throwing toys off so we have to get them, riding one of our cats, and surfing. From what I understand surfing is unique to caiques. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBVRImJIfTI]Caique surfing! (Caique) - YouTube[/ame]

He giggles, makes kissing noises, catcalls, and copies the cats and front door from time to time. He screams occasionally, but we're working on it. Our biggest issue right now is that an acquaintance was aggressive with him when we first got him, so anyone he associates with that person he's violent toward. Usually, though, caiques bond with multiple people and are good with strangers. Let me know if you have any questions about them!

Fargo- Blue and Gold Macaw
I have a blue and gold macaw!

He likes car trips, he sits on my shoulder all the way, looks out the window!

Some birds LOVE cars, others might hate them

Big trucks i think might be a bit scary?

And Fargo gets car sick hahaha yep... he gets motion sickness after just 30 minutes in a car :p

How much time do you have to spend with the bird each day?

Are you looking at macaws mainly?

So you would bond with the bird for 8 months and then leave? Or would the bird be brought with you?

It would be pretty hard for a bird to be with someone for 8 months, bond with them, then be left!

Unless the bird is also bonded with another member of your family!

Usually a bird with choose a partner, one person to bond with, unless the bird is well socialised and can get along with a few people!

Have you looked at the mini macaws? Caiques, conures ?

ya it would come with me. and travel with me on the road. i would love to have a companion with me on the road. and i think that if i get the right bird that it would enjoy being on the road. and once on the road ill be with it 24/7 for a month or two at a time.

The 6 in your household, who are they? And what influence over your bird will they have?

We can say "X" bird will be great, but in the long run the WHOLE HOUSE has to be ready for this.

They will burn things in the oven, cook with Teflon, use candles, yell at your bird when you're not around and maybe even torment him. Not to mention use all the wrong cleaning supplies.

I just can't see that ending well...
