Anyway I took Nika in for a vet visit last Monday, and the next day I called them to find out if they could use the blood sample for a DNA gender test. They had plenty of blood, so I ordered the test. And Nika is a BOY! I was almost positive she was a girl. It will take a while to sink in. I will change her name....I was thinking of using the name he had before I got him. It was Gosha. It's his favorite word...maybe he was telling me that all along, that he likes Gosha. What do you think of that name? :(
I just got the results a few minutes ago, now Iim heading out to do a few clients.

How do you pronounce it?

My partners last name is Goacher, go-shh-er. Curious if it's similar!

I would have thought just changing the name to something like 'Niko' would have been better, for similarities sake!

If it's his favourite word, why not! He obviously loves it :p

Parrots don't care if they have a female or male specific name lol I've met a female grey name Earnie, and a female blue and good named Zachery hahaha

If you like the current name just keep calling him that, if not go with his original name since he obviously loves it :)

Nooooo! You can't do that! That'd drive me nuts if my birds had the 'wrong' type of name. Some are gender neutral, etc. But I don't think I could ever call my male pet Lady, or something very girly. / vs versa! It just all of a sudden, 'doesnt suit'! I just can't do it haha! Sure, if they speak their name, I get it, but I'd probably still try to gender up the name slightly.

Like Audrey who had a female Merlin - she called her Miss Merlin :p

(and before anyone thinks I'm against LBGT, or anything like that, I'm not!)

I think Nika is appropriate for either, but I probably would have changed to Niko, or Gosha since he's so keen :)

I am having a Gender test done when I take my bird to drop off for bird sitting while I am away for thanksgiving.

I swear it's a male bird, but I can't wait to know for sure! Patrick would be a hard name to change into a girls name if it turns out he is a girl. :p

LOL. This remindes me of when my boss came to work and told me her Grey "Earl" that was 16yrs old laid an egg. She was so baffled. Birds name is still Earl.

You could also switch it to nico. (sounds like knee coe)

Patty!

There's LOADS ;)

I get my guys tested on the first vet visit when bringing them home (except budgies, I just wait them out :p). Charlie technically hasn't been tested for me, but the lady had him DNA'd (I haven't got the results yet...) and he was being sold as a c0ck bird. So, I'd bloody well hope he was male :p

If he's female, well Charlie's pretty neutral, if not I'll make him Charlotte or something... :)

Kalidasa, the same thing happened to me with Fiji, except I thought she was BOY. What a surprise I got! It took me a few days to wrap my head around it. Now, several months later, I can finally say SHE when talking about Fiji.

I would keep Nika's name, I like it. Nika is a cute name, and really could be for a boy or a girl.

I like that, calling a Grey "Earl"... Earl Grey Tea is pretty popular here in UK ^^

He could still be Nika, although i personally would probably call him Niko. That's just me though, not like i would think Nika is 'wrong' for a boy. Gosha is also cute--i would be saying "Goshi" which would morph into "Goshibird" or "Goshiboy", LOL. We all know how names just fall apart completely into silliness.

Merlin is more often than not called Monkeybutt/Trouble... Charlie is generally 'Tired Ted' or Charlie Chops/Cheeky Chops.

So yeah, I suppose if we're all honest. Their "real" name never matters :p

I really didn't think this would have any impact, but it's actually quite an adjustment! I just keep looking at him and bursting out laughing, saying you dirty sneaky boy! Of course this warrants an entire new crop of toys. Gosha is a Russian word, it means farmer or something like that. Her previous people were a very young Russian couple who got rid of her after they had a baby. But she does like the word, but she also says Nika, and an few other words. But Gosha is her go-to word :) (I keep saying she) it's pronounced the way it's spelled (I think) where the o is as in "open". When I came in from work, the first thing I said is Gosha, and he went nuts. But I'm still not decided. I'm also considering "munchy" "Dexter" and "Merlin". I just finished the BBC series of merlin and the name has grown on me :). But I think it's gonna have to be a boys name, I don't want him ending up in therapy :)

My Merlin is from the BBC too! With his and leg I felt he suited the 'clumsy' nature of BBC's Merlin. :)

I just finished watching all of it, had rented the series from the library. It grew on me. That's funny your bird is named after him, maybe the character is more bird-like than was intended lol. But a very likable character, and after hearing the name thousands if times in the course if watching it for a month, the name has grown on me. :)but I have to roll all this over in my mind before I decide.

I LOVE the name Gosha :) - it's unusual and cute. One thing I found interesting is I watched Parrot Confidential tonight and one of the parrot rescuers said if they didn't know the history of a bird or it's name, that the bird would often say it's name - so that is probably what Gosha is doing!
