For the ten years we've had Max he hasn't lived in a cage, only on perches and his boing.
His former family of twenty years told us he doesn't like to be caged.

He does seem intrigued by cages though and whenever he gets a chance he likes to climb inside and out.

I have this cage hanging outside for Primor, my Amazon.

How do you keep Max from flying away when he's outside?
Does Max poop all over your house or does he mostly go potty when he's over newspaper?

For some reason Max just does not fly. (knock on wood)
I don't know what his former owners did but he is not clipped and only opens his wings when he sees a towel or to show off.
I've never seen him flap his wings.
He never developed the muscles.

We transport him to his multiple perches around the house with newspaper underneath.

If he is ever away from these areas he will definitely make a huge mess when and where he wants. SPLAT!

Does he jump down from perches and walk around?

Does he jump down from perches and walk around?

He is totally mischievous and if he could he would.
We have to build his perches in such a way that he can't climb down.

We do let him walk on the floor occasionally but he will soon start to look for nesting spots. He loves the pantry with his best friend the dust-pan.

On the porch he has this perch and he can't get to that center support. Primor's cage is in the corner and Primor is cat-walking the windowsill by the curtain.

He rarely does this. I think he was just getting a lay of the land.

In the kitchen he has one of these rope boing things with no way to get down to floor. We make it pretty dark for him in the kitchen and this is where he sleeps.

You can see his regular perch in the background with a big overhanging tray to keep him from climbing down.

He has a pretty cool set up and looks happy that's for sure. Such a magnificent bird! I realize he doesn't even try to fly but I wonder why he doesn't try flap and jump down to the ground. I had a Goffin's cockatoo that refused to stay on a perch stand. He didn't fly but he would flap and coast to the ground and run around the house. I wish I could have gotten him to stay on the perch but he just wouldn't do it. He had to be on me constantly.

Once a while back his perch was unstable, it tilted and he glided to the ground.
It was sort of a fluke but good to know he has that ability to not fall like a rock.

If he did fly or could get to the ground he would be impossible. He is relentless in his pursuit of towels and he is also a serial biter.

I "think?" he's happy.
Our lives certainly revolve around him.

I wouldn't want to be chased around the house by Max. You have a nice house. Max would probably destroy it if he ran around on the floor. You're both pretty lucky.

Please just junk that round bird cage. Parrots need corners so they can establish a safe place when they feel like it, round cages do not offer that. And this one is too small for anything other then MAYBE a conure, but the bar spacing is too wide for them. Round cages went out with the Victorian age!

Yup thanks so much.
This is just a cage that I put my amazon in for a few minutes to take a shower outside, or to sunbath supervised while I water the garden.
He's rarely in it for more than twenty minutes.

If that is all it is used for then it is fine. The size of it is probably no different than a travel cage and people use those in the same manner all the time.

What do your Amazons think of Max?

What I mean is are they intimidated by his size or anything?

My Bingo is the biggest bird in the house and he knows it.
He recently got taught a lesson in humility by Luna a smaller amazon.
But I have thought many times (not seriously) about getting a Mac monster just to show Bingo he’s not so big after all.

I love macaws. But that beak is just too intimidating for me to be….. easy working around it.

As to the cage….
that picture of Max inside the cage brings back sad memories.

As a child 6/7 yo In the 60’s .
Back when you knew most everyone on your block.
We had neighbors 3/4 houses down from us who inherited a macaw.
It was either a green wing or scarlet, as a child I did not pay particular attention.
That poor poor bird. It was left in a cage of about that size constantly.
It was left in the service porch along with the washer ,dryer , and water heater.
The Lady of the house was a chain smoker just to top things off.
To this day I feel bad about it.

If I only had that DeLorean I would use it for that bird.

Primor is wary of Max, but Max is afraid of Primor.

If Primor ever flies onto Max's perch Max will get as far away from Primor as possible. Thank God.

I have used this in the past as a travel cage for Max. He can fit head to tail.
Everything is a toy to him so it's just another game.

Someone gave me this cage when I adopted their amazon Abba-babba. When Abba would get anxious she would not perch and would just go round and round in circles in this cage.
We gave her one of appropriate shape and size.

Alright, everyone is missing the real mystery here…

Your patio is so gorgeous and your floors are so clean…even with the mac monster and the Amazon!!! What is your secret?! Do you have Oompa Loompas that come out at night and clean?! Lol!

And fully intact curtains. Be still my heart.
