I plan on making some lengthy posts here about my complicated situation in Oregon.
Donā€™t know if I am looking for advice or just making this post as a way to organize my thoughts and priorities.

While I am spend time in Oregon (with my elderly and dementia riddled father) my son is in charge of my flock.
His vehicle has broken down and I need to return ASAP to fix things up.
When I get home I will try to write down why this situation is so complicated and upload some videos and pics of the place.

Wanted to leave you with 2 pics I took of the local red tailed hawk.
I think there is a nest somewhere on our hill if not exactly on our property.

You have a big mama Hawk there and she should have at least two full fledged babies some place around, likely eating!

Know you have our support, good friend!

Sorry to hear your time in the PNW is due to trying circumstances. You came at the best time of year to enjoy the weather, as long as your fatherā€™s place has air conditioning!

We have A/C.
We also have a natural breeze that kicks up every evening.
Itā€™s one of the things that attracts the hawks to our hill.
Unfortunately those in power here would rather use electricity, if it was up to meā€¦ā€¦.
I would make more use of nature all around me.
They do dumb things like that then complain about the high cost of electricity.

It's very sad to watch your parent(s) get very old and lose themselves in illness, disability and dementia. My parents are both 88 and strokes have taken their toll. I'm about to visit them for a week but it's so painful to see two people who lead happy healthy successful lives end their days in such misery. Feel free to share the struggles you are having with your own father. Talk to your birds- they make great therapists sometimes!

Heh, thatā€™s fair! I forget that it probably stays cooler if youā€™re not in the city with a zillion teeny townhouses all stacked atop each other.

Pet the donkeys for me if theyā€™ll let you, theyā€™re adorable! Havenā€™t seen one in person since I moved from Louisiana!

I have not spent much time with the donkeys as I should have.
I feel sad for them.
I have only been able to scratch/pet one of them.
All the donkeys have this thing(halter?) on their heads.
The friendly one wants scratches underneath this canvas halter where there is a metal ring.
I am sure he finds it irritating.
I bet they all do, but we donā€™t own them.

I did have a close encounter with one of the cows.
There is a number of calves in this small herd so I was surprised I got so close.
They were up by the fence line when I was walking around.
walked up slow and in stages, extended hand and let her sniff me. Then just backed off.

History.

My grandparents (on my father's side) bought this 15 acer farm about 1965 for retirement. I would have been about 4 YO at the time.
It's located in Southern Oregon on a hill near the Rouge river.

I grew up in a suburb of LA and the first time I visited the farm I was maybe 5 YO.
At that time a drive from LA to Oregon took a lot longer. There was no interstate 5 and leaving LA was through driving what is now called The Old Ridge Rout.
A twisty windy road that was near guarantee to make me car sick.
Then a long drive on highway 99 to southern end of Sacramento.
Highway 99 ended at that point and you had to navigate through a large part of the city to pick up the start of 99 again.
Anyway just getting there was an adventure.

My family (Father, Mother, sister, and myself) Were up here most every summer vacation and 2, maybe 3 Christmas vacations.
Our stays were mostly 1 or 2 week's at a time due to my fathers job and vacation time available for him.
Once or twice our parents brought us up here and left us for the whole glorious summer vacation.

To say I have lots of childhood memories would be an understatement.
The fact that my sister is no longer on this earth makes some of the memories much closer. I feel closer to her here than anywhere.

My father inherited the place from his parents and has always insisted he wants me to have it when he is gone.
I would be the 3rd generation in the family to own and live up here.

My father prepared a living trust with this in mind but I need to have the document looked at by a professional to see just where I stand.
My stepmother (let's call her Mrs. E) keeps talking about wanting to sell the place.
She is only interested in the money she could get out of it.

Enough for now.

My latest trip to Oregon was a real disaster and a financial burden I could have done without.
Tire blew out and an expensive tow + new tires (2, I don't change just 1 unless there is no choice) .
But I am not posting to gripe or not much .
I got some great family gossip but this is not the place for that either.
Drove into the high desert just at sunset and had to get my wife to snap a picture.
This photo is actually facing southeast not looking west so the last rays of the sun are striking the mountains.

I name this photo "Purple mountain's majesty.

Well I have to keep it PG.
I have a niece and nephew and they are 1/2 brother/sister to each other.
Perhaps because they were raised as Air Force brats (my sister was in the Air Force) they remained very close.
My Nephew came up to Oregon at the same time by request of my stepmom to celebrate my father/stepmom's 50th anniversary (the main reason I went too).
Everyone in the family knew that both my Nephew (also in the Air Force) and Niece got a divorced from their respective wife/husband at nearly the same time.
Well it wasn't a coincidence.
My Nephew while on deployment to the middle east got word from a neighbor that his wife um... decided she liked my niece's hubby better than she liked my Nephew.
So now both X's are together and both my sisters kids are divorced.
You can't make this stuff up I tell you.
AAAAnnnndddd. My Nephew got full custody of his son (and even in this day and age of equal rights it's unusual for the guy to get FULL custody.
Apparently the two X's like to fight with each other and do drugs.

As I just made reference to in a different thread I am back at my Oregon home and things are serious.

Since we last spoke my father ended up in a heap on the bedroom floor and stepmom could not get him up.
SO EMT's to the rescue and he was swept up to the hospital.
Nothing seemed to be wrong per say aside from him being 89 years old anyhow .
But he was week and they were giving physical thearipy in hospital till a bed in a nursing home with in house phisical thearipy became avalible.
The fact is it is nearing the point that stepmom won't be able to care for him herself. She is a tiny little thin and not psyicly able.
Plus the dementia has a strong grip on my dad.
He is constantly afraid and he does not know what from.
Can't stand to be out of sight of his wife.
She is a life preserver in a stormy sea for my father

It's coming up on 2 weeks in the nursing home but things went south 2 days ago.

Both my Father and stepmom are symptomatic with Covid.

It's a big mess I don't know if they will let me see my father or not.
I am not sure seeing my father would necessarily be good for him.
He will want me to stay with him and he is in quarantine so I can't even enter the room.

Well this is more than most anybody here on PF want to read about.
I don't have "friends" on facebook. I don't DO facebook.
I think I have a closer relationship with folks of a similar mindset.

To top off everything.
internet connectivity is crap.
my iPad (that I use like 90% of the time) just wont connect.
I don't understand why my laptop works and the iPad is a hard no.

I'm so sorry about what you are going through with your very elderly folks. My parents are the same ages as yours with similar problems that are going to do nothing but get worse until the pass away. It's so hard to watch your previously happy healthy parents lose their mobility, health and their minds at the end of what once were really good successful lives.

So true.
My father was a very smart man once.
No genius but in his area of knowledge.
He helped design some of the Surveyor landers.
Some of the first craft to soft land on the moon.

Now he can't tell the difference between the TV remote and the cordless phone and can't work either one.

There is a plack here from the company. If I can edit out his name will post it

My plan and hope has always been to live up on our farm in Oregon.

It could happen this year but I need to be there before living there because of my fatherā€™s poor health.
But my second vehicle is unsafe to drive and canā€™t leave it for my wife when I head north.
So I was forced to buy a used vehicle out of my hard earned savings .

I think I ended up with a solid car that can do more than my junker mini van can.
I got it through carmax.
I have bought 9/10 cars from dealerships so am familiar with the car purchasing process .
I have only bought 2 used cars through dealerships.
now 3.

Carmax was a surreal experience to an experience car buyer. I think i would be a good way to do it for your first time.

anyway this is what I ended up with.
2014 X Terra .
can haul cages, inside or on top.
can even tow like 4,000 Lbs.

Well I guess I got that truck (going to name it X like Musk) just in time.

got a call Tuesday last week saying my father had hours to days left.
Made the trip up (750 miles) in good time the next day.
despite the rainy weather.
He passed in the early morning on Sunday.
Sad yes, very sad but his quality of life the last 3/4 months was 0.

He always intended this place to be mine on his death.
Itā€™s what was/had been in his living trust.
I donā€™t know what changes my stepmom has made in it, she has mentioned that she ā€œupdatedā€ it.
updates & changes may not be legal as my father had dementia for the last several years.
The way he had the will written it should have been locked šŸ”’ in at the time he became legally incompetent.

Is there a lawyer in the house .

and another thing.

my fatherā€¦.. many people would label him a ā€œgun nutā€.
I would not say they were wrong.
Some people have a ā€œgreen thumb ā€œ.
some people are ā€œnatural born grease monkeys ā€œ
some people have perfect pitch.

my father could look at a piece out of a firearm and tell chapter and verse about it. Tell you if it had been well maintained, well used are near new.

he always made money on his collection.
this was another legacy y father intended to leave for me.
Alas my stepmom has sold most everything.

there are or should be 3 class 3 firearms.
because of the paperwork and strict government regulations they are not ez to transfer.
they are also some of the most valuable.
I have to look into getting the paperwork in my name before they fly out the window.

this might be difficult so long as I am a legal resident of Ca.

anyway I am up here away from my babies and needing their emotional support more than ever..

this is sort of the back yard. Must have been 30 Starlings looking for worms šŸ›

As I join this ever increasing gathering of your friends and fellow Parrot Lovers. Know that I understand the loss, as that been there, done that thing is a reality. May your Father now find that peaceful field he so desires. May that and other memories come to comfort you dear friend. Know you have many friends that care!

Living Trust can be strong, but only as strong as the strength that was built into them. Within the formation of the Trust and as an equal member his 'wife' is co-owner of the holdings of the Trust. The division of property is commonly still with in the Trust can be designated, but ownership is still 90% of the Law, and she can distribute those items.

If you cannot get your hands on a copy of the document everything else is much like Words in the Wind. If your Father included you on the Title of Property that will help! As a sale of the Property would require your signature.

You need to get the name of the Law Firm that has the document sets of the Living Trust and get in front of the Attorney!
