I got my first GCC, Flick, a week ago. The breeder told me he does not step up in his cage yet, and I found that to be true. In fact, he wasn't stepping up ANYWHERE. He is cuddly and tame and cries for attention when he doesn't get it, but he had to be picked up rather than stepping up. Today I offered him a finger instead of four fingers with thumb tucked like I usually do. I had observed the breeder and this is also how she handled her birds. When I offered just one it was because he was acting jumpy and I wanted to offer him a small area to investigate and reassure himself, so I just kind of offered him the tip of my finger to taste and remember. Well he grabbed it and hopped on! I was delighted! I gave him scritches and a treat and put him back in the cage and offered my finger again. He hopped right up! He has done it several times now, what a silly thing to have not tried before! Now he is sitting on the couch preening and I need to get back to my work, but I just wanted to share my happiness with you all!

Here is a picture of yesterday's couch time.

I got in the habit of offering a "board" rather than a finger long ago when I found that I got bitten less often that way for some reason. The breeder did it too, and it never occurred to me that he might not realize I wanted him to step up, or some other reason not to. I just assumed he didn't know about stepping up, and was trying (unsuccessfully) to bribe him onto my finger.

He is :) And such a cuddler! I have had cuddly babies before, but they were always on their way to new homes so I had to be careful how attached I got. This is the first time I have had a hand-raised bird as a personal pet. It sure is fun!
