Some foreign countries breed them along with about every other kind of bird you can imagine.

seen all sorts of parrots, birds of paradise etc.
but I thought for sure that was photoshop.

An ever increasing number of Countries are restricting what Birds are allowed to be kept as Companion Birds (Pet Birds). Prior to bring it home, confirm that it is even legal to have it as a pet! Also, as one brings ever more exotic pets into their home only to find that their local Vets do not provide support beyond the very basics. Also, diet can be very demanding as well.

After reading about them, the thing that surprised me is their semi-zygodactyl feet. Apparently they have one movable toe which can either go in the back or front. A wonderfully odd member or the bird family. Still no clue on why its the State Bird of Switzerland.

Red crested turaco, which this appears to be, is listed at least concern, which is the opposite of critically endangered.
