I have a sun conure, she's going on her 7th month. She eats very healthy, but today I notice one of her feathers laying on the floor..I'm worried if whether she's might had plucked or it's a normal molting phase..
I'm pretty sure she's probably starting her first molt.....some suns will molt as young as 5 months.....soon she'll start looking like a pin cushion & develop a bit of an attitude....most birds get grumpy & some don't like to be handled during molting.
If she doesn't take many baths yet, misting her or taking her into the shower helps with molting itchiness.....the only problem might be is that my birds prefer cold water in their bath bowls so you may need to steel yourself with cold ones.....
Tis the time of year for a molt =). It's a good to give a bath at least once a week. It helps to keep the skin from being so dry and the feathers that will come in will not feel as uncomfortable as they would with out a bath. Some birds like to have the sheath around the new feather removed where they can not reach. Just be careful not to tug to hard. @ BirdLuv -- if you see more feathers dropping, see if they are in pairs. That's how they molt -- one feather from one side, then a corresponding feather from the other side. Usually within the same day or by the next day you should be able to make a pair.
