pulling baby conures from the nest

Why are the photos red... How do you know their EARS are starting to open? I thought the eyes were first...

It is the heat lamp I use to keep them warm that is red, it is for avian use too. And the first baby already opened its eyes a few days ago, I know the ears are starting to open because their is a little hole where the ears are.
