Ok, the feds will not destroy any bird that is seized. I work for CBP and have been involved in seizing live animals. We are very careful to insure the health and safety of any animal we seize. Most of the time, being we are at JFK, the animal is given over to the care of the NYC ASPCA. The animal is actually evidence in any case against the violator, so must be kept alive. In addition to that, we must not violate anybody's rights by destroying their property without due process. Usually, any birds seized, and there are plenty, go to the Bronx Zoo for care. Ultimately, if not returned to the original owner, they stay there to live out their lives.

The laws are very specific as to any property seized. We have to hold the property for set periods of time to allow anyone who may have an interest to come forward. The procedures for due process protect the seized animal pretty much for the rest of their lives. Hope this makes everyone feel better. LOL
