Trying to decide on a cage...

Hi everyone! I'm, new here and this is my first parrot.

I'm picking my 15week old african grey up in 1 week and I'm buying a used cage for him. I can't decide which cage I like better. I work from home 4days a week so a large cage isn't necessary as I plan only to cage him when he sleeps and at night.(and if I run to the store or leave the house) Sometimes I do go into the office/work but it's never more than 4hrs or more than 2 days a week. :)

Cage #1

Cage #2

Demensions: 32" Wide , 21" Deep, 54" Tall without stand

Cage #3

Demensions: 36" High x 26" Wide x 20" Deep WITH STAND

Cage #4

Demensions: 32" Wide x 23" Deep x 57" High on wheels/stand

I like #1 and #4 the best but I want some other opinions! Are any too small to even consider? Also is washing down the cage with hose water good enough to get it clean? Or should I combine 1gallon water with 1/4cup bleach and wipe it down as well?

Thanks guys!

I would go with the biggest cage you can afford. Even the little time he would be in the cage he would still be active and need room to move and play.

I would wipe it down with water/bleach and then hose it down really good just to be on the safe side.

I would say width matters more but that is just my opinion. I think either #1 or #4 would work.

Minimum for an African Grey should be 32" wide and Depth 20" and height 36". But if your bird is only in the cage to sleep, then size isn't a real big deal. But you also have to take into account, things change like people changing jobs or office hours indrease to 8-10 hours a day, or you go out over night. So I have to agree, get the biggest cage you can afford to by. But the above measurements would be the smallest I would consider.

I also would think long and hard about putting a newly aquired bird in a used cage. If your looking at one of the cages that you have posted, THEY ARE OUTSIDE CAGES or seem to be outside by the photos. That means RUST, which is bad for birds. With the cost of an African Grey, I would bite the bullit and buy a NEW cage.

But if you don't, I don't use bleach on bird cages. When I clean them, I use a hand held steamer like you see on the shopping channels and on those aggravating Infomercials. The water comes out at like 220 degrees and is plenty hot enough to kill any germs and is a breeze to get that stuck on crud off the cage.

Good luck with your new bird.

As Mike above me said I would buy a new cage as well . Yep rust is a killer . I use vinegar in my steamer as well and yes it comes off so easy . steam and wipe with a paper towel and wallah , nice clean cage . Good luck to you and hope all goes well with the grey .

I think #1 looks really nice. Its a good size, looks like its well made and it has a playtop.

I have number one and my grey loves it. I would buy new though as suggested earlier. Check out that cage on petco's website. I got mine for a great price and you can look for promotion codes to get even more $ off.Once again I would say go with #1.

Yeah, they have a discount code for 10% off. And I think that cage is like $239.00 before the 10% is taken off, plus free shipping.

I must add as an owner of a baby grey I wouldn't get a cage like number 2. I found out greys are quite clumsy and that is a pretty long fall.
