Using GelStain

I'd like to refinish my kitchen cabinets, using gelstain. If I put the birds in another room, maybe downstairs, close the door, turn air exchanger off, do you think the fumes would still be a problem? I have no one to take them for a few days, so I'm trying to find a solution that would allow them to stay here. Opening windows in the room that they're in, would probably not be a good idea, as it's winter here...

Do you have a garage? You could put a heater in the garage and refinish them down there. Then you could refinish the frames of the doors and there would be less fumes to worry about when you put the birds in another room.

Can you find a water-based Gelstain, Sharon? Or at least one with no VOC's?

We have a shed, but I don't think it would be warm enough to apply stain, and let dry even with a heater. I'm checking water based, but I doubt it...it goes on the existing finish, which would indicate that it would have to be oil based...
