Green cheek conure and parakeet
Hello. I am new to this forum. I need advice on what to do and how to cope.

I have 2 out of 3 birds left since I was a kid (I’m in my 30s now). The conure is 25 years old and the parakeet is 15 years old. They both got dementia and refuse to come out of the cage. The birds grew up together but don’t know who each other is anymore as they tried to kill each other one day.

My mom got 2 dogs and had the 2 birds living with her. Recently my mom moved to a place that can’t have birds as pets. I have been taking care of the birds. However, I am now moving across the country for a new job and I can’t take the birds with as the apartment I’m going to living in does not accept birds. I feel so bad and sad I have to get rid of them. Nobody in my family will take them. What do I do? Where do I look?

Try finding a rescue organization that will place your birds in a responsible home. If that’s not an option, you can post on Facebook, Craigslist, or any other website. Make sure you’re very upfront about the birds’ issues so that potential adopters know what they’re getting into. One benefit of rehoming yourself rather than through an organization is that you can be as strict as you want with the conditions of the birds’ new home. If you can’t find anything, then try to find a temporary arrangement so you can take more time finding a permanent home for them. I’m sorry you’re going through this and wish you the best of luck.

Welcome to the forums, @Alexus7, though I am sorry for the predicament that you and your birds face. In addition to the excellent advice provided above, you can try your local avian vet clinics. Sometimes they have regular and trusted clients who are looking to adopt, and they may be helpful in a situation like yours where age-related illness could be involved. You should be able to find some clinics in your area on the listed provided below...

Also, a parrot rescue may be an option for you too. Our list of rescue services is listed below - unfortunately it does not contain many options and I'm not sure exactly where in the world you are located, but if none of these are near you they may know of one that is and could provide some contacts for you...
