GCC named Pancake
Hello,
I am new to this forum and I am a brand new mom of a GCC! This is my first exotic bird and I just had a bunch of questions that anybody can feel free to answer. Her name is pancake and we got her from a pet store and I just don’t know where to start. She’s very shy and won’t come to us when we try to get her to do that, she kind of moves away from us. I’m just looking for any tips and tricks to help us bond and I was also wondering when and if she will start talking and how I go about training her to do that. We have her in a good spot with a curtain and a blanket to cover up with at night. Her cage has plenty of space and we got her some good food so I guess anything that anyone has to say suggest, and any feedback that anyone has would be so good! I hope to hear from some of you soon!

Welcome to the forums and congrats on your new baby!

Here are some threads you may wish to check out:
I highly recommend researching bird body language and watching some YouTube videos to learn how to communicate and understand your new bird.

You can’t really train a parrot to talk, but many do pick up words hear often over time. It’s up to the bird if they want to try talking or not! Time will tell. And you may find she or he repeats things you don’t want them saying! šŸ˜‚

We love to see pictures of birds so please share a photo of your new baby if you can! Wishing you the best of luck and happiness as a new parront.

Welcome. I'd like to see pictures too. As above about threads that will help. Read everything you can about birdie body language. That, learning your birds personality and patience are very important. Be sure and check out the nutrition threads.

Welcome and be welcomed.

So first some prelminaries. Onamom is 100% correct, parrots talk because they want to; one cannot force them to talk. However you can get that to happen by talking, often, to your bird. HAving said that, some species are better known for it then others, and sorry ut conures are not known as fabulos speakers. Most never do. Take heart, conures have many other traits that are special!

Parrots are all about trust, and that takes time, sometimes a lot of time, for that to build in parrots. Measure everything you do with your parrot by that yardstick - does this build trust or break it? A few weeks is not uncommon and even several months, in a very flighty bird. A good start is to spend a lot of time just sitting near or next to the cage. Read to her! Parrot love to be read to. A good suggestion is to read the "I Love Amazons" thread at the top of the Amazon subforum. It contains TONS of priceless info for all parrots, not just Amazons! Read in a soft soothing friendly voice and dont be afraid to do it several times!

Hello,
So my bird goes to everybody but me I keep trying to go at the birds pace and it just runs away from me all the time it snuggles with my best friend. It goes to my husband and my other best friend, but wants nothing to do with me I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong or what it is about me that my bird doesn’t like. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you the sole feeder and cage cleaner? If not, you might want to give it a try. Whenever you walk by the cage, feed it a special treat that only YOU give it, and by hand if possible. My guys love nutriberries and avicakes.

Hopefully, there are other suggestions :) Good luck!

Birds react positively or negatively to things we think nothing about. When passing give verbal praise as well as treats. If possible sit near him, watch TV, read aloud from paper or book. Are you wearing acrylic nails or polish? Some birds react negatively to them. Above all be patient and consistent.
