A little bit of Bella

I understand exactly what you are talking about. My conures donā€™t really care if I change their cages. They are more accepting of change then my Ekkie. My Ekkie starts feather plucking, and getting overly sensitive over the smallest changes. When I adopted him years ago I was very overwhelmed because Iā€™d never came across a parrot so sensitive to change, and diet.
Of course that is my biggest concern, starting up feather plucking..
She still does it some, and barbering but not to the extent she had before we adopted her.

Ohh African Grey... So cool šŸ˜Ž
I notice it's using its left leg to eat.
They say all cockatoos use there left legs to eat, I wonder if its the same with African Greys
Interesting comment about eating. I'm going to have to look at my Tigger and see what foot he uses!

I believe itā€™s same as people.
but opposite.
there are right handed and left handed.
but in the bird world left is dominant 70% of the time.
read it somewhere but donā€™t recall where now.

And, I would have guessed that Bella would have been a bit more concerned about new folks showing up!! Up when something is radioactive, it is what it is and begone radioactive one, begone with you!!

Maybe but I have to admit every time I have seen a species of cockatoo do that it has been with the left hand. It has been suggested by some that they're all left footers

Never say never! Although, they are most commonly left clawed, my DYHA will switch it up based on his location and where I am coming from requesting a Step-Up.

When one has seen a few thousand, one will understand that although commonly left, right does occur and many times with the same Parrot.

Iā€™m late to Bellas party! What a beauty and what gorgeous feathers. Sheā€™s a blessed baby. My Kokkie is right clawed totally and when our phone rings sheā€™s quick to say ā€œBonjourā€ that Iā€™ve never taught her. Theyā€™re awesome!

Yes, I have been following your journey with your new CAG.
I love the red accent feathers.

I guess hormone season has hit Bella.

Bella isnā€™t bonded to me so she doesnā€™t show signs of affection to me, just my wife.

Every time my wife comes close to her cage she starts regurgitating for her.
She has become more insistent in getting into the cupboards for nest making.
But worst of all is she is plucking her chest feathers down to not much.
This has happened before. I remember because itā€™s the worst possible time to have poor insulation against the cold.

I wish I could put a bird warmer in her cage but she is just too frightened by new.

Tis, the start of the Season!!

Julio has been steady so far this season, with hope we can keep it that way for at least a few more weeks. He commonly starts late December, very early January. Last year was Hell as he started the end of November and ended in April.

Let's take a survey: is your parrot left footed, right footed or ambidextrous?
My budgies don't eat with their feet so they don't count, but sometimes Rocky stands on a food item with both feet to hold it still while she eats it.

I have been wanting to write about Bella for a while now but.....
Bella is just so amazing I can't remember what all to put down.

She has an incredible sense of..... prediction......timing..... intuition.
She says bless you to my wife when she sneezes and does it so fast, I mean she doesn't even finish the sneeze and she says it.
My son and I don't get a bless you when WE sneeze.

She recently started saying my name Wes.
Ok, no surprise there. She hears it many times a day.
BUT she will say Wes once or twice and then say Wesley.
Nobody in the house calls me Wesley.
There is one bill I pay every month over the phone.
In that phone call to pay the bill I have to say my full name and "authorized"
That's it, the only time she hears my full name. Once a month.
That's a pretty good trick knowing Wes and Wesley are essentially the same.
Wish I could thing of some of the other stuff she does all the time that we find so amazing.
I can't take good pictures any longer. I am unable to hold my hands steady enough .
But here is a recent pic of Bella eating a piece of arapa (sort of a South American tortilla) next to my wife's feet.

smart little girl you have there wesley!

Bella was very talkative today and what's more she wasn't camera shy.
So I got a fair recording of her talking and noise making.
You have to turn up the volume, I was not sitting close to her.
She says Wes a few times .
Unfortunately she likes to burp.
She hasn't learned how to say excuse me yet but I am working on it.

and after almost 4 years of retirement Bella started up saying " have to go to work". She hasn't said that for 3 years at least.

I have been thinking Bella deserves a name change.

I should name her Radar like from the old MASH TV show.
She is always listening to us. she pays attention to what we say and reacts to it.

If I start talking about having to put her back in the cage she knows.
If she is getting in trouble in the kitchen she hears me get up from the couch to check on her and she instantly stops.

She learned a new word too.
I wish she hadn't learned this one.
It refers to a part of the human anatomy ever human male/female has.

A name change...
I don't know it just feels funny to me like changing your partners name
Iv noticed in Asia they like to change names a bit
Nissan was Datsun
Mitsubishi was Sigma
Mumbai was Bombay
Hi Chi Min was Saigon
Beijing was Shanghai
New Dheli was something else

Bella is a beautiful name literally as Bella means beautiful in some languages.

Also you might confuse your bird.
Na if it was up to me I'd leave the name but it's up to you.

I am really just joking.
youā€™d have to know the MASH TV show.
Radar was a character who could hear the helicopters bringing wounded men before anyone else could.
thatā€™s how he got the nickname ā€œRadarā€.

Bella is like that.
when she hears her name or talk about her she knows.

If we start to yawn, somehow Bella keys in on it and will make a yawning sound before we finish ours.

Greys seem to be especially attuned to everything that goes on around them. But parrots of all kinds keep their eyes and ears on alert nearly all the time. I suppose that being a prey animal has something to do with it, but I think that some of it comes from just not wanting to miss out on anything, like the chance of getting a tasty treat, or evading discovery for doing something they're not supposed to be doing. :)

Clearly it's a hardwired response from being prey, but it clearly works well for them as companions as well!
