A new experiment with Salty

With the passing of my dear wife, its just Salty and I. Its been going pretty well, Salty is getting used to me being absent for several hours at a stretch, with me being away doing things. But this weekend will be the first time I am taking him with me, to do a 3 day show in Virginia. Its a 8 hour car trip, and 3 days of daytime shows. Salty will either be on my shoulder (in harness) or in his new larger travel cage. THe cage is bigger then the Pac-O-Bird he is used to traveling in, but that one is too small to have him in for many hours. So last night was the first time Salty was to sleep in the new cage. Did not go well - for the first time ever, I had to actually towel him, to get him into it. Very upsetting for both of us. I made a cover from his old cage's blackout material. We'll see what his disposition is when I wake him up later this morning. THe plan is to get him used to it, until Friday, when its travel day. We'll be leaving at Holy S**T O'clock in the morning, traveling the 8 hrs to Virginia.

I am going to use this thread to document what happens. A lot is riding on the success of this trip, as boarding Salty is not the solution. Wish us luck.

Gig season is upon us here in the Northeast as well. Starting off a little slow (2-3 a week) as there's only two ships currently in the region, but more on the way and it gets insane through the summer into early October. Gotta love it though

Wondering just what kind of transport cage you got for Salty.
As you may know we are looking at moving the whole flock 750 miles about a 12 hour drive in normal conditions.
I have the one Pak o bird carrier. For short trips it’s ok but putting water in the bowl is a complete waste cuz it just spills soon as you move the thing.

But I just ordered a transport cage from parrot wizard.
They have a sale on and….and well I need something so thought I’d give it a try. Still waiting for it to be delivered.

I also have that cage, but for a 3 day use, I felt it was too small. The one I am intending to use is a bit larger, but not built as strong as this one above. Its lighter too. The one above weighs a ton - if only they made one in Aluminum.

It was always a challenge to get my old YCA George into his transport cage, but once he was in, it was even tougher to get him to come out. Typical Amazon contrariness.

Saved by a good neighbor, who I trust and also has a parrot. She will bird sit, ie check on Salty a few times a day. The travel AND having to perform was going to be a tough nut, and Im glad I dont have to risk my relationship with Salty over this. He really hated going into that travel cage and Im sure he would not have been the sanguine and calm bird I am used to and certainly not happy to go in and out of it all day long.

We have the above travel cage and it is aluminum! We got it years ago at our local bird store and apparently it was the last one she could get, so guess they don't make them anymore.

So my neighbor stepped up and watched Salty for me. It would not have been a good trip, ot was like 100 deg outside. And he was not a good boy for the neighbor, biting her several times. SO Poof there goes that resource. Next time we go away he HAS to come with me.

He was all piss and vinegar that nite, but next morning , he is fine. Always is, if I explain, with fingers, how many days I will be away. Even when it used to be 2 weeks.
