I am so sorry for your loss. I too lost a female bird to egg laying issues. She was a single bird and laid eggs two different times. The 3rd time time I woke up in the morning and she did not greet me the way she normally did. I got her to the vet right away and he tried to save her but it was too late and she passed away from egg binding issues. Like you although it was traumatic, I missed having a bird in my house. I made the decision that the next time I would get a male bird. I now own a Moustache Parakeet named Fuji. You will know when the time is right to bring another fid into your home.

I too am very sorry to hear of your loss of Charlie. It sounds like she was loved dearly.

For those birds who don't take to the cuttlebone, you can always scrape some off into their food bowl on top of what they're eating. You can also buy 'Egg Food' which has added calcium and protein for developing eggs and helping with that (you just add a little bit of moisture to it and serve, or sprinkle over their food), you could serve her leafy dark greens, or you could also make birdie bread -- basically a cornbread muffin mix and you add in things they need -- like some cuttlebone scrapings, you could add in that egg food I mentioned before, things like sweet potato, veggies, fruit, all kinds of things and you bake it in the oven and parrots usually love that stuff.

Again I am sorry about Charlie. You will be hard pressed to find a member here who has not lost a feathered friend. Birds can be so good at hiding symptoms and egg binding of course is not that uncommon.

Welcome, please understand many of us have experienced similar grief. Birds do not come with an owner's manual and we do our very best and continually learn, sometimes from sad experience.

When the time is right you'll likely find another fid comes fluttering into your heart.

Welcome. Part of the problem in life is we don't know everything in advance. It sounds like you did a good job educating yourself, and got blindsided by something you didn't know was a thing. That gives you an advantage going forward. Don't be afraid to get another bird - in fact, consider adopting one from a rescue. Many people buy birds without knowing the first thing about them, and then when they realize the parrot wants to do parrot things (scream, chew, bite, poop, etc.) off it goes, sometimes with significant health or emotional problems. These birds need loving homes.

There are some very good book that will help you prepare for things. It's good to keep some on hand as references. I like "Parrots for Dummies" and "The Second Hand Parrot" very well. I keep them on hand and re-read them when I have some down time, and I always learn something new.
